The Joy of Creating

by Skye Gallagher

Teacher of Design

Last term students thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with a range of ceramic-making techniques, such as hand building, wheel throwing, slip casting and glazing.

Working on their own individual project, we had some exquisite results. Ed (Year 10) focused particularly on wheel throwing and experimental glazing and created this vibrant tumbler.

This term we will be focusing on firing and glazing techniques such as Raku, an ancient Japanese firing technique, and smoke firing, a burnished low temperature process. The results of both processes are earthy, unpredictable and beautiful.

Bella (Year 10) mastering the wheel.

Zoe (Year 8) painting her piece ready for firing.

I am again offering ceramics classes this term through the Elective Program. No experience necessary, just bring your imagination, learn the techniques and take pleasure in creating something unique.
