Middle School

From the Head of Middle School

What a fantastic year. It was full of learning, fun and excitement. This last week has been extremely busy wrapping up all the assessments, reporting data, awards, secret santas, cleaning out classrooms and lockers, interschool athletics, Christmas Chapel service, and classroom work. Everyone is ready for the Christmas break!

Middle School Leaders

I would particularly like to thank the Year Nine School Leaders who have done an outstanding job leading the student body this year. They have embodied the School values of Integrity, Respect, Compassion and Commitment and I could not be more proud of such a fine group of young people. Even this week we delivered baskets of goods to Foodbank as the leaders wanted to assist people in need at Christmas. They took their role very seriously and worked together as a team from the Leadership Camp before school started to the last day of school. The School’s student leadership pathway will be in good hands in the future.

As we push towards the end of the year I would like to personally thank the Heads of Year, Ms Penny Simpson, Mr Brett Tompkin and Mr Bryce McLean as well as Miss Claire St Jack in Middle School Student Services, for their tireless efforts guiding and helping our students. To all of the Middle School Homeroom teachers and teaching staff thank you for your energy and passion.

To all our students, I hope you can reflect on some great achievements this year. You have achieved a lot and I hope you have had some great fun along the way.

I hope all GSG families have a rewarding break and a holy Christmas. Wind down and take time to be together as a family. I look forward to welcoming you back next year.

Year Nine Community Service

Over the past week, the Year Nine Homerooms have been collecting food items for Foodbank. Today, five Year Nine Leaders went to Foodbank and presented the donated items. They learnt about the role of Foodbank and how vital a service it is to the Albany community.

Year Eight Community Service

The Year Eight Leaders have been working hard to help sort the donated stationary items for the Give Write organisation. We have had a great amount of good quality used pens, pencils, textas and wind-up crayons that the Year Eight Leaders have sorted and organised into colours.

Each year, the Year Seven students learn about the importance of community. They learn how by just lending a hand for a few hours can make such a difference to someone. Christmas is often a very difficult time, especially for those who have experienced, or are experiencing, domestic violence.

As part of our focus on others, the Year Seven students have again collected items to go into hampers for the women and children at the Albany Women's Shelter.Items such as toiletries, pyjamas and small gifts for the women and children have all been donated over the past few weeks and will be delivered to the shelter at the end of the school term. Hopefully, this will make someone's Christmas just a little bit brighter.

St George's Trip

At risk of sounding exaggerated, the St. George’s trip was possibly the best school camp I have ever been on. Every day was packed with interesting and exciting activities and I doubt there was a single moment during the camp that I wasn’t intrigued or ecstatic (aside from maybe the trip home during which I slept for the entire 4.5 hours).

The camp was so full of activities and excursions that you were guaranteed to have something that interested you every day of the week. I personally don’t enjoy zoos all that much but the week-long scavenger hunt for photos and videos during the camp (which my group won, yay!!) made the trip to the Perth Zoo exciting and enjoyable. My favourite part of the week was all of it. But if I had to choose one specific activity it would probably be the Zumba. Everyone dressed in bright fluoro, dancing uncoordinatedly around the Quad, was the highlight of my week. But while the activities throughout the week were super enjoyable, the people we met during the trip were what made the week.

The students attending the camp from other schools were all incredibly nice and charismatic people and I believe most of us have made strong and lasting connections with some of the students from the other attending schools. The other aspect of what made the trip such a pleasant experience were the mentors: Lavanya, Giselle, David, Aditi, Kyia, Marcus, and Emma. All currently attend St. George’s as students and they are the most kind, compassionate and charming people and are what really made the camp for me and the others. If you get the chance to attend this camp, you will not regret it. The St. George’s trip has given me insight into college life as well as memorable experiences that I will not take for granted. I am grateful I was given the opportunity to experience this camp and I am super grateful for Miss Smith and Mr McLean for organising this trip. Thank you!
