As the year comes to an end our art installation for the welcome walk is very close to completion. The finishing touches are being added in the last week of school, grouting in our stones so they will last for years to come. A big thank you to all the students who were involved in this project.

An Overview of our Learning

Foundation students have finished off their sewing with excellent results. This challenging project saw our students rise high with resilience and determination. Every student succeeded in this task and I couldn't be prouder of them.

I am so proud of the work that the 1s and 2s have done with their balloon project. They worked in teams to get the job done and get their balloons flying. The finished result brings many ooos and ahhhs along the hallway as staff and students admire the work.

To finish off the year, these students are learning to weave on a loom. We have discussed the elements of a loom including the warp and weft threads and the way they are used in industry to create materials. Despite a number of tangles as they learn, we always manage to get it right again to keep practicing and get the hang of the over and under pattern.

Christmas decorations and tessellations. We have finished the year by creating our own designs, drawing on examples for inspiration or coming up with something new. The stained glass windows went up briefly to colour our day and the Christmas decorations look amazing decorating our painted trees. There are so many different styles and ideas.

We had a quick introduction to the work of MC Escher and his fascination with tessellations, perfectly interlocking pieces to cover a surface.  This then led us to the work of an artist named Jason Panda form Canada and the Belong Together project. Belong Together is a tile based project created as a response to connections lost and communities fragmented during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its goal is to remind us that, even apart, we’re each an integral piece of the puzzle. Students each decorated a tile in response to how they feel right now be it happy, sad, tired, excited, hopeful etc, or they simply played with the materials to see what would come of it. Together these pieces form a whole artwork that expresses how they feel, they belong together.

We managed to squeeze in some last minute clay sculptures to finish off the year, and I'm so glad we did. Students were able to experiment with air dry clay to create a pot monster or other character or style of their choice.
