Year 7 FIELD TRIP
The Year 7L class tested the sound quality around the surrounding streets as part of their Place and Liveability unit ... and they also tested their own ability to make noise. This activity used simple geospatial and geographic technologies to assess noise level as an indicator of liveability. The students discovered that prolonged exposure to sounds above 80 decibels can be damaging:
30dB – whisper
40dB – refrigerator
60dB – normal conversation
70dB – vacuum
80-85dB – heavy traffic, loud conversation
105dB – rock concert
140dB – jet plan taking off
165dB – shotgun
It is now the students’ task to determine the liveability in their local area, perhaps considering the quality of sound as an indicator, along with many other qualitative and quantitative indicators.
YEAR 9 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP TO EASTERN BEACH
As part of their Year 9 Geography unit investigating tourism, students undertook a full day field trip along the Geelong Waterfront. In the days leading up to the excursion, they selected a research question and created a hypothesis to test.
The unpredictable spring weather turned a kind eye and the students examined the strengths and weaknesses of Geelong’s tourism facilities and infrastructure. Field sketches, photographs and observational notes were taken.
It was great to see the full Year 9 cohort out of lockdown ... out of remote learning and out of the classroom to engage in practical learning. Hot chips to stave off the cold, ice creams when the sun came out and a seagull having a close encounter with a student added to the meteorological and learning diversity that will make the experience a memorable day.
