Student News

Congratulations to Annabel O'Toole (Year 8) who  competed in the Portland Yacht Club annual regatta on the weekend.  She won the Junior Division sailing a "Laser". There were eight races over the two days for her to compete in and all were very close.

Zoe Addinsall continues to shine in the sport of Tetrathlon. She has been travelling Vicrtoria for regular events and having great success. She will be competing in the State Show Jumping and Dressage competitions later this month. Good luck Zoe!

Swimming

The annual Inter House Swimming Carnival was held on Tuesday at the Hamilton Outdoor Pool. A full report on the day from the Swimming Captains will appear in this edition of the newsletter. Students who qualified for the Glenelg Division (GD) Swimming Sports next Thursday 18 February at the Portland Swimming Complex have been notified and are expected to train on the Monday and Wednesday next week from 4-5pm at the Hamilton Outdoor Pool. We also have a special lunchtime session at HILAC on Wednesday for full relay team practice. It would be great to see many family and friends make the trip down to Portland to support the team. Races begin at 10am and the conclusion will be at approximately 2pm.

Basketball Report

It was great to see our students back out on the basketball courts last week up at HILAC in the various junior competitions. We have 18 junior teams competing in this Term One season. All players by now should know when their training is happening and attendance vital for team functionality, improvement, enjoyment and success.

Those students wanting to play in the longer winter season should let me know when I ask for interest later in Term One. The HBA is also asking for senior team entries so students who are considering playing senior basketball should email me by Wednesday 17th February to discuss options as our senior team entries are likely to look different this year with the introduction of the 18 and Under Division.

Football Report

If your son or daughter are looking to play football this year I encourage them to play at the highest level in the western part of Victoria and that competition is the Hampden League, playing  against teams mainly based in and surrounding Warrnambool as well as some other bigger towns within the district. The Hamilton Kangaroos have teams that have started training or are about to, so if your child is interested in trying out they should attend all or some of the training sessions at the following times at the main ground in town – Melville Oval:

Under 18’s – Monday and Wednesday from 5.30-7.00pm

Under 16’s – Monday from 4.30-5.30pm

Under 14’s – Wednesday from 4.14-5.30pm

Girls Youth team – still to be confirmed

If you require more information please contact myself or our 2021 Football Captains, Magnus Howells and Mitzi Adamson.

House Swimming Report

The Senior School House Swimming Day - a day to remember! The first for many, but sadly, the last for our Year 12’s. The House themes this year had the most creative and wacky designs yet! Laidlaw dressed as the ‘The Aquabats’, masks and all (a blast from the past for all those ABC 3 watchers). Learmonth took a more environmental approach and came out in their buzzy bee costumes, a force to be reckoned with (especially if you have allergies). Berry on the other hand harnessed their creative side, dressing as the ‘Berry Ballerinas’ with tutus and all and last but definitely not least was Young House, dressing from head to toe in their best John Deere outfits alongside their very impressive cardboard replica of the iconic green tractor!

Despite the delightful distractions there was a very serious matter at hand, winning of the 2021 Swimming House Cup! Records were being broken left, right and centre - congratulations Lachlan Rees who beat the 50m backstroke record for his age group by a generous half a second and Gabriel Marshall smashed the 50m Breaststroke time by almost 2 seconds! But the most impressive record of the day must go to Zoe Rudge, beating the 50m Breaststroke record that has stood since 2012 by a whole second!

After all the first half excitement, everyone enjoyed a well-deserved lunch break and the racing continued...it was time for the most anticipated race of the day, teachers v students. Both teams were confident of a win, only time would tell. The whistle blows and they’re off! The student team took a strong lead but then the oldies turned on the jets! Neck and neck for the rest of the relay, it was anyone’s race, but in the end, the students pulled ahead and brought home the win for 2021.

Finally, with everyone pool side to watch the relays, the final two events were the most special. The 18-20 boys and girls freestyle relay teams were extremely strong and after years of practice, everyone blitzed their leg of the race! Well done Year 12s, it was a proud and joyous moment for everyone.

Now it was time to award the College champions for 2021. The female and male champions of the pool are determined by the points gathered during the day for the best five events. Congratulations Chloe Lyons, Female Champion of the Fyfe Family Trophy and Lachlan Rees, Male Champion of the Kerr Family Trophy. And although it was a tough one to judge, the Coxon/Campbell Cheering Cup was awarded to Learmonth, they were buzzing!

The Girls Aggregate was won by Young with a whopping 815 points! 133 points ahead of second place. The Boys Aggregate was also won by Young on 782, another 100 points in front of second! Finally, if it wasn’t obvious, huge congratulations to Young House for taking home the Grand Aggregate, with a massive 1,600 points! A very well-deserved win after an amazing day of fun in the sun! A big congratulations to all competitors and supporters!

I would like to send a huge thank you to the parents, friends, teachers and Old Collegians who  volunteering their time to be time keepers and for all the support and encouragement from the side of the Hamilton Outdoor Pool. A special mention goes to Mr Alexander and Mr Singh for all their organisation, training and expertise. And of course, thank you to Dr Hirst who carried the day with his enthusiastic and uplifting commentary on the microphone! Thank you everyone, the day was a major success and one to never forget!

Cricket

The cricket season is back alive with a number of high-quality performances throughout all junior grades. It is pleasing to see some familiar names continuing to perform, alongside some fresh names who have stepped up to show their true talents. Special mention to College U16s who remain unbeaten as we enter the final rounds of the season.

Finally, it was very pleasingly to see Adam Cameron take his first wicket for the season. Commitment and training are the catalyst to improve, and it is great to see many of our boys living by this mantra.
