The seven types of rest for our boarders

This week I shared an article with our boarders. It was written by Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith and outlined the importance of rest. It was a short and thought-provoking article for boarders, especially in these times. Unlike the standard focus on good sleep hygiene, rest, is a topic commonly mistaken. Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith outlined seven types of rest as:

  • Physical rest – passive rest such as sleeping and napping.
  • Mental rest – turning your mind off and letting things go.
  • Sensory rest – a break from bright lights, computers, phones and zoom calls.
  • Creative rest – rest from problem solving and brainstorming. Instead take in the natural environment.
  • Emotional rest – take time to be yourself and be open.
  • Social rest – alone time can be healthy, as is surrounding yourself with positive influences.
  • Spiritual rest – engage in something greater than yourself.

For our boarders, rest is a challenge for them to achieve at times and understanding these different types of rest can be a way in which they are fully recharged and balanced for the challenges the next day brings.  For the full article see: https://ideas.ted.com/the-7-types-of-rest-that-every-person-needs/

Boarder profile: Year 12 boarding brings balance to life for Mitzi Adamson.

My name is Mitzi Adamson and I am completing Year 12 and now a weekly boarder. The decision to start boarding in Year 12 is helping with my studies while creating a well-balanced weekly routine. I live on the outskirts of Port Fairy and play girls football and basketball. A big reason for my decision to move into boarding was to regain the two hours of travel time each day to focus on achieving my academic and sporting goals. The most enjoyable aspect about boarding is the amount of time I have in the morning, I’m able to get up, go for a run and enjoy breakfast without worrying about missing the bus. Boarding will be a definite highlight when I reflect on my final year at College!

Port Fairy surfing experience.

Last weekend a small group pf boarders were lucky enough to try their hand surfing at Port Fairy. Although the weather was looking and feeling a little grim here in Hamilton, Port Fairy provided some sunny weather while the students caught a few waves. Having some expert help to assist in their technique was Old Collegian and boarder from 2020, Sean Cashill. He made the boys feel right at home in the water and ensured they all achieved the success of standing up. To finish off the day, the surfers enjoyed some fish and chips at the beach.
