Student Banking no longer allowed at School

Please be aware that students will no longer be able to bring their Commonwealth Bank bank books to school as from 2021. We have received the following information from the Department of Education which explains why the program has been dropped.

Thank you so much for your past support of the program and our grateful thanks go to the wonderful parent banking co-ordinators who have volunteered their time to process the children's banking. We  really appreciate the time and effort you have taken to ensue the children's bank books were collected and monies deposited into their bank accounts. The program could not have run without your support. Enjoy your retirement!

Banking programs and financial literacy programs banned in schools

School banking and financial literacy programs delivered by financial institutions will be banned from Term 1, 2021

From Term 1 next year, school banking and financial literacy programs provided by financial institutions will be banned in Victorian government schools and replaced by quality school-led programs.

Financial literacy is taught through the mathematics and economics and business learning areas of the Victorian Curriculum Foundation to Level 10.

Why school banking and financial literacy programs are being banned

The findings of the Royal Commission into the Banking and Financial Services Industry highlighted the importance of financial literacy and education in schools and the economic fallout of coronavirus (COVID-19) has further underscored this need.

Students, teachers and families have frequently raised concerns about the quality of education and financial literacy outcomes provided by school banking programs. Concerns have also been raised about banks using inappropriate tactics to increase sales and market to children.

Message from the Commonwealth Bank

From Term 1, 2021 the Victorian Government has ceased school banking programs in

Victorian government schools. As a result, the CommBank School Banking program will no longer operate at our school after the end of this term. If you are unsure of other methods of depositing to your child’s account, please feel free to contact the Bank’s general enquiries hotline on 13 2221 or alternatively visit your local CommBank branch.

We would like to thank you for your participation and support throughout the School Banking program.
