Division Swimming 16 March 2021

Today at division swimming the following students attended a new and unfamiliar venue at Oakleigh Recreation Centre with the regular pool Carnegie under renovation:

Sophia G, Phoebe K, Phoebe S, Felicity S: 4 x 50m freestyle relay

Lachlan K: Freestyle and backstroke

Ewan W: Freestyle and backstroke

Alice W: Breaststroke and butterfly

Phoebe S: Freestyle, Butterfly

Aaron F: Breaststroke

Kira S: Backstroke

Harry F: Backstroke, Breaststroke

The students were seeded with their times from the previous round determining their allocated lanes. But we were clearly a strong team with most swimmers being placed in lanes 3, 4 and 5.

The aim was to finish first which would give automatic qualification to the regional round at MSAC on the 29th March.

As a team I could not be prouder of their efforts with ALL of the team placing either first, second or third in their respective races.

The following students Lachlan, Kira, Harry, Phoebe, K, Phoebe S, Sophia and Felicity will represent Kingston Division at the next round and we wish them well.

Good luck everyone!

Tennis Focus at BPS!

Over the last few weeks tennis has been a major focus at BPS within and outside of the curriculum.

Each term government schools can apply for Sporting Schools Grants to supplement the expertise from within the PE Department.  This term the grant was used to support the younger students in grade 2 and 3. They improved their skills and game understanding by participating in fun activities through their tennis clinics with Patrick Douglas from St. Andrews Tennis Club.

The inter-school Hot Shots Tennis Team have had a couple of bye rounds this term as some of our Seaside Schools do not have enough grade 5 and 6 students to field a team so Mrs. Travis has organised extra coaching sessions through Patrick on Friday mornings which has seen a noticeable improvement in the teams performances.

On the 16th of March 5 students participated in the Seaside District Tennis Competition in the girls and open events. This was held at Royal Avenue, Sandringham and the students had to officiate their own games. The students involved were:

Torin H, Lachlan K, Phoebe K, Kingsley B and Willow B.

The criteria for entering, if anyone would like to know for future reference, is that students need to be in grade 5 and 6 and be playing at club level.

Although I could not be there on the day, the feedback that I received was that our students were exemplary in their efforts and sportsmanship and Lachlan will progress to the next round by winning the open event on the day.

Speaking of Lachlan he is continuing to push his game to extraordinary high standards and I am delighted to report that he has been selected into a National Age Group Competition in Canberra in the Easter holidays! In Lachlan’s words:

“In this tournament every single match that I play there will be a chair umpire just like the pros have so it's pretty cool. It is held in Lyneham Canberra on the clay courts. I will be playing singles and doubles and I will be guaranteed at least 5 matches because they work out exactly where you came.
During the middle there is a doubles day where we play all our doubles matches.
The people who will be playing the event are kids that have a good UTR (universal tennis rating) and AR (Australian ranking) and also kids that qualified. So there were two kids from each state that qualified, and I was one of them from Victoria.
Cruz Hewitt, Lleyton Hewitt son, will be playing and lots of young really good players.
The way I made it into this event was by qualifying. The way they did this was they set up a tournament at Dingley Village Tennis Club and I played 4 matches and won all of the matches. This meant that I earnt a spot in the national tournament. I had to win all my matches to earn the wild card.
Actually my UTR was good enough to get me a direct entry but dad thought I should wait another year to do a tournament at this level.  But I convinced him to let me enter the qualifying tournament and we agreed if I won I would go.  So I get to go!”
