Textiles and Design

Year 12 Major works were on display last for staff recently and the students have described their works below.

Tamika Brown

My MTP fits into the textiles area of costume. I’ve made a child's costume inspired by the movie ‘Frozen’, which is Anna's dress. The bodice is made from a black cotton/elastane drill.  It has ruffles gathered on either side of the armhole (constructed of purple cotton poplin) and has hand embroidery along the front of the bodice incorporating flowers and leaves. The dress has a centre back zipper. All the bodice is lined with a cotton fabric which is soft on the skin of the child who will be wearing it. The skirt is made of a royal blue cotton poplin that is gathered to add texture and fullness to the skirt. At the base of the skirt there's a purple cotton poplin hem. The skirt is lined with more of the royal blue cotton poplin gathered to fit the skirt. The lining has white bridal net added to it to make the skirt look more full and princess-like.

The inspiration for my MTP was the ocean and the idea of sustainability. I took the focus area of Textile Arts to portray these themes in a unique way. I have created a dress that holds an array of handmade embellishments to reflect my sources of inspiration. The shell of the dress is made from cotton calico and is fully lined. I then hand stitched strips of organza that had been finished with a rolled hem to portray the look of kelp and seaweed. I then created and stitched on the coral embellishments that were all formed by either wet felting, dry felting, free machine embroidery or manipulating Angelina fibres. This piece I have created is an interesting reflection of the ocean and coral reefs portrayed as a textile piece.

For my MTP I took inspiration from Edgar Degas’ paintings and the ballet. I have created a two piece dance costume that hopefully reflects this. The bodice I created is made from a teal like silk dupion fabric, which is embellished with a unique floral hand embroidery design, complimenting the decolletage. The bodice is fully lined and boned with a hook and eye closure at the centre back. My skirt is made from a soft bridal tulle which I dyed myself  to match the intricate colours within the silk dupion. The skirt is constructed from two tiers of tulle which are different in lengths, the tulle is held in place by the fully lined skirt yoke which sits under the bodice.

I was inspired by the night sky and stars for my MTP. I have made a two piece formal

ensemble, featuring a high neck singlet top and a layered tulle skirt with sparkling ribboning which can be used for a formal event or dinner. The sleeveless top was constructed from a luxurious deep blue/navy stretch velvet and an invisible zipper at the back to complete the item. Layers of gathered, soft, bridal net in black were attached to a navy satin underlay skirt and finished with a small waistband.

For my project,I have created an 18th century ball gown. I was inspired by the Rococo style which is why I took the focus area of the costume for my MTP. The ball gown main colours include pastel blue with a hint of pink.

For my MTP, I have created a two-piece formal wear, detailed with my very own unique screen printed pattern of my Ta Moko. My cousin originally designed my Ta Moko to be used for a tattoo, which is where I drew my main inspiration from. In Māori culture, the Ta

Moko reflects the individual's whakapapa (ancestry) and personal history. In earlier times it was an important signifier of social rank, knowledge, skill and eligibility to marry. (My family is from Waikato, New Zealand). I used a soft polyester/ sateen fabric with a slightly pink tinge to capture the elegance of the overall idea. The corset style top was fully boned and lined. Eyelets down the centre back complete the top. The design was screen printed on several panels of the corset. The skirt consists of an A line design, fully lined, two splits at the front and a centre back invisible zipper.
