5PE - R U OK? Day

Resources to assist adults to support children and resources for the grown ups too!

There’s no question that this school term has been very tough for most of us. As we all look towards a change of pace and hoped for opportunities to stretch our wings, just a little, I thought I’d share some interesting articles with you as well as some fun holiday activities.

Wellbeing of Children

Firstly, I thought I’d cover an area of concern for us all and that is the wellbeing of the children in our care. A couple of articles put out on the Victorian State Government Education and Training website may prove helpful:

  1. For parents and carers – Wellbeing support for students during the school holidays, ‘provides tips and resources to support the mental health and wellbeing of children’ over the school holidays. https://www.education.vic.gov.au/PAL/mental-health-schools-wellbeing-support-school-holidays-parents-carers.pdf
  2. Wellbeing activities and conversation starters for parents of primary school-aged children provides, ‘a range of activities that will help building and maintain’ the wellbeing of children. It covers 6 key elements, with some additional activities, across different school year levels.                                                                                       These activities are taken from the topics within the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program.

(i) Understanding emotions

(ii) Personal Strengths

(iii) Positive coping

(iv) Problem solving

(v) Stress management

(vi) Help seeking.

In addition, the Emerging Minds organisation provides helpful resources to support the mental health of children:

Wellbeing of Adults

Secondly, I thought I’d cover the wellbeing of adults with some excellent Australian articles put out by ‘The Conversation’:

  1. ‘We’re all exhausted but are you experiencing burnout? Here’s what to look out for’ – dated August 19. 2021 https://theconversation.com/were-all-exhausted-but-are-you-experiencing-burnout-heres-what-to-look-out-for-164393

Within this article are links to other interesting and relevant articles. I recommend clicking on the following links:

(i) ‘Read more: It’s OK if you have a little cry in lockdown. You’re grieving’ – August 13, 2021

(ii) ‘Read more: Compassion Fatigue: the cost some workers pay for caring’ – December 2, 2014

(iii) ‘Read more: Spending time in nature has always been important, but now it’s an essential part of coping with the pandemic’ – dated March 15, 2021

In addition, there’s a helpful link with (i) above, ‘Read more: Lockdowns don’t get easier the more we have them. Melbourne, here are 6 tips to help you cope’ – June 3, 2021.

Fun Activities

Finally, here are some fun activities to undertake with children during the coming school holidays:

The Fathering Project is a secular, research-based, not-for-profit organisation that provides programs, resources, and events specific to the engagement style of fathers and father figures. Funded by the Commonwealth Government, we’re currently working with hundreds of Australian schools to build a community of positively engaged dads and families.

Trusting that during the school holidays each one of you finds the time to enjoy a change of pace and scenery in order to recharge your batteries for Term 4.

Take care of yourselves and your precious ones.
