Education Week

Mackellar celebrated Education Week from Monday 24th - Thursday 27th May. The theme for this year's Education Week was "Building Communities".  As part of Education Week we participated in lots of exciting activities.

Students had the opportunity to decorate the classroom doorways in a literacy or numeracy theme. Students enjoyed getting creative making the doorways inviting ready to welcome parents into the Expo night.

We enjoyed welcoming the parent community into the school during our Mackellar Open Night Expo.  It was fantastic to see such a large number of parents attend on what was a very cold, wet night. Students enjoyed showing parents the classrooms and specialist areas and the work that they have been doing so far this year. There was lots of excited chatter and laughter as students demonstrated literacy and numeracy activities with their parents. A fun night was had by all.

As part of Education Week celebrations on Tuesday May 25th, author and illustrator Lucinda Gifford visited Mackellar to work with our students. She showcased many of her books and spoke to the children about what it’s like being an author, the process of creating books and demonstrated how she creates her amazing illustrations. Students also had the opportunity to become illustrators themselves, by creating their own drawings of animals.

Our students loved listening to and working with Lucinda and we hope that she can visit us again soon! The illustrations she made on the day will be on display near the office, so when you are able to come back into school, please pop by and have a look.

Wednesday 26th May was National Sorry day . Students participated in a range of activities that acknowledged the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflected on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation.  A special thank you to our local Koorie Education Support Officers (KESO) from the Department for their assistance in locating culturally appropriate resources and activities for the day.

Unfortunately our dress up parade was postponed due to COVID restrictions.
