What's happening in our classrooms

Grade 4

Grade 4

Literacy

As part of our Literacy program in Term 2, students in grade 4 are developing the ability to pose and answer higher order questions using ‘Bloom’s Taxonomy.’

In reading, students have been learning about the different questions we can answer while reading. We have analysed a variety of texts including informative texts and narratives, while focussing on analytical, synthesising and evaluative question starters.

Students have been engaged in reading a variety of non-fiction texts presented in a variety of ways.

In writing, students have been busy planning and drafting persuasive texts. All students are in the process of publishing their writing to persuade other people on an issue that is important to them.

Numeracy

The numeracy strands that we have focussed on so far for term 2 have been place value, decimals, time and length.

We have learnt to represent numbers in different ways by renaming, expanding and modelling numbers as well as reading and writing numbers in words. We have also learnt to identify the place and value of a digit in a whole number. We are learning how to compare and make decimal numbers using Decimats to represent tenths and hundredths.

When we are reading time, we are learning to use the words ‘past’ and ‘to’ to describe time on analogue clocks. We are learning to read analogue time to the minute.

For length students have learnt to measure centimetres accurately using a ruler and to convert centimetres to millimetres understanding 10 millimetres is equal to 1 centimetre.

Inquiry

During term 2, grade 4 students have been working on our unit titled ‘Our Changing Land’. They have researched and located natural and man-made landmarks in the states and territories. We researched the most populated areas and why there is growth in these areas. At the end of the unit students will be working in groups to create an advertisement to persuade tourists to visit Australia using their knowledge of natural and man-made landmarks.

Lucinda Gifford – author/illustrator

We had an exciting visit from Lucinda Gifford, where she discussed the process of creating a story map and how to draw illustrations to match in the development of a published book. She demonstrated how she creates characters for her books and the students had the opportunity to create their own character with Lucinda’s guidance.
