Out and About

Oorala's UNE Experience Day

Indigenous students from ASC attended the Oorala UNE Experience Day in Week 8. The day-long visit is designed to inspire students to pursue further education and to explore the rich history of survival and innovation in Aboriginal culture.

Students participated in archaeological studies related to Aboriginal stone technology, making their own sharp flint rocks to cut meat and strip bark. Following this students went indoors to view various fossils including skulls, snakes, rabbits, turtle shells, and a recently deceased cat. Technology used to analyse the age of ceramic and stone artefacts was also on display. Lastly students investigated the relationship between teeth and diet in carnivores and herbivores by examining the dentures of canine and sheep skulls.

The day was a great success with students realising that learning beyond school can be both rewarding and achievable.

Beechwood Studio visit

Students from our Year 8 Elective Music visited Beechwood Studio to record the tracks they have been working on this semester.

A big thank you to Colin Bale for making everyone feel welcome. We are so lucky to use these facilities!

Cultural video making

Some of our Year 7 and 8 students have been heading over to the Aboriginal Cultural and Keeping Place to take part in the production of a cultural video.

They are really enjoying the experience and we are looking forward to sharing the final product!

Making music at Quirindi

Seven of our students attended the 2021 New England Bandlink and Vocal Workshops held at Quirindi in late May. They had two wonderful days of playing music with students from all around the region.

The event features a series of workshops for public school students in Years 5 to 12 who are vocalists or play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. Led by professional tutors these workshops bring specialised skills to country NSW students.

Thank you to Mr Myers for organising the trip.

HSC Booster Days

In Week 7, Year 12 students travelled to the University of New England to participate in experiences to ‘BOOST’ their studies towards the fast-approaching HSC.

For example, our biology students were able to observe a variety of disease-causing agents, ranging from bacteria to parasites!  They also conducted simple experiments to classify bacteria and determine blood types.

The event was well received by students who were able to see how learning experiences at school translate to study and career options beyond the HSC.
