Tournament of Minds

Tournament of Minds (TOM) is a team based creative problem solving competition open to students from Year 5 to Year 10. Teams of seven mixed age students work together over a six week period to solve a large problem but also have to think quickly together on competition day to solve a spontaneous challenge as well. We have had enthusiastic teams successfully competing for the past few years.

Mrs Chacon is co-ordinating the Junior School teams, while I will be co-ordinating the Senior School teams.

Students from Years 7 to 10 who would like to nominate to be selected in a team must complete this online form: https://forms.gle/6ELjoLWyp1rDLdT18

This form has also been in the Compass newsfeed all week. Nominations close at 5pm on Monday 14 June.

It is important that the nomination form is completed as thoroughly as possible as the names of applicants will be removed from the forms for the selection process.

Further information about TOM can be found at https://www.tom.edu.au/

da Vinci Decathlon

The Year 7 and Year 9 da Vinci Decathlon teams recently competed in the State Final. There were more than 60 teams each day for our students to compete against. The ten tasks were more challenging than those for the regional competition but this did not deter our teams. While we did not receive any prizes, I am extremely proud of the effort, creativeness and enthusiasm these students participated with.

Congratulations to the following students:

Year 7 - Alexander Lemech, Archie Keough, Ariarne Mota, Ellie Zhu, Jaiden Cherian, Kate Miller, Mahrosh Ahmad and Hansa Rathnayake

Year 9 - AnnaSimone Ghabrial, Caitlin Cumberlege, Cecil Wahba, Lucy Russell, Isaac Bloor, Karin Rezkalla, Michael Paolucci-Ellis and Vinudi Rathnayaka

Chess

Our interschool chess team played Coolamon Central School in the most recent round of the Country Interschool Chess Competition. We travelled to Coolamon, where we were very warmly welcomed and played in an atmosphere of friendly competition. With some well thought out strategy and also some quick thinking, we won three of our four games. The team representing us was Charlie Dore, Hudson Crofts, Brandon Collins and Owen Ranby.

Our next round will be against Marian Catholic College, Griffith.

The Interhouse Chess competition has reached the final rounds. Quarter final games began this week with Charlie Dore, Mina Girgis, Jack Stanton, Owen Ranby, Jaiden Cherian, Hudson Crofts, Teddy Leah and Brandon Collins battling it out to determine the College Chess Champion. Good luck to all our players!
