Stanley House

During Term 2, we have focused on a number of wellbeing topics that have the capacity to have an impact on your son/daughter's ability to reach his or her potential.

  • Holiday Gratitude
  • Peer mentoring
  • Social media and using devices
  • The impact of social media on one’s wellbeing
  • Trolling and cyberbullying
  • Boundary setting on social media

We all understand that our children are growing up in a different world to the one that we did. The correct use of mobile phones and devices and the effect that it has on students' ability to learn is an important issue that we as educators and parents must be aware of.

More and more issues come back to social media and the impact that it has on students' wellbeing; Anxieties and stress, lack of sleep, half an hour on a game here and there.

A couple of simple things,

  • Have a conversation with your teen; open communication is important, we are all busy, take some time to chat.
  • No phones or devices in the bedroom, temptation to check the beep or tone is just too much.
  • There is so much going on during the school week, be aware of how your teen is utilising their time.

We now have secure lockers in the College, students are required to place their mobile phones in their locker between 9.00 am and 3.10 pm.

In homeroom, the students have been working on an assessment timelines. This should have been shared with you, so you are aware of what is due and when, and keep an eye on the workload.

We see an increase in stress around assessment due dates and we can help manage the workload and anxieties with preparation and forward planning.

Year 9 Camp

This was a great experience at the Royal National Park, the focus was upon building resilience, the students had an enjoyable time…... without their mobile phones, yes they can get by without them.

I am currently organising our Stanley House Day which will be held on 26th August. The theme is ‘Book Week” so start thinking about your costume. We will be providing the Junior School with a chance to show us how it is done. We may also be bringing back the cake auction after a year out. Year 7 and 8 students will have not experienced this. I can tell you that it is amazing, so get those women's weekly cake books out and dust off your aprons.
