Reports and Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences

Term 2 is fast drawing to a close and thus we enter the vital reporting period for our learning community. As teachers we consider this to be a vital moment to report on the strengths and areas for development we have witnessed in your child’s learning journey over the last semester.

A guide around how we report will be sent with the reports, but I would like to summarise the key points here. We use A-E reporting as mandated by The NSW Educational Standards Authority; these are based on outcomes derived from the NESA and International Baccalaureate syllabuses. The phrasing that we use for this includes:

A

Extensive

Thorough

C

Sound

D

Basic

Elementary

It is important to understand that most students will be at the Sound level and that this is perfectly fine. Achieving in the higher levels actually requires a student to be working well beyond what is expected of their particular stage. Likewise, achieving Basic or Elementary usually suggests that there are areas of growth and the teacher will provide insight into building capacity in those areas via their comment. Thorough and Extensive outcomes are fantastic, although our key message is that there are always areas for further development, be it in regards to knowledge, skill, or approaches to learning.

We also report on the Approaches to Learning (ATLs), with the phrasing for these including:

Outstanding

B

Working beyond stage

C

Stage appropriate

Developing

Needing support

The ATLs themselves are categorised as

Communication Communication

Collaboration Skills

Self-Management Organisation Skills
Affective Skills

Reflection Skills

Research Information Literacy Skills

Media Literacy Skills

Thinking Critical Thinking Skills
Creative Thinking Skills

Transfer Skills

SocialCollaboration Skills

We think these are a vital component in learning success, building lifelong skills that apply across all aspects of learning and success in life post school.

Of course, reports can only tell some of the story. This is why Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences are such a vital part of the process. We encourage all parents to attend the upcoming day and evening events. Details will be sent via Compass.
