Yesterday, 11 students represented the College playing Rugby for ISA at Oxford Falls.

The 1st XV featuring Zac Davidson defeated CHS 27-17 and now get the chance to play GPS on Friday 18 June.

The 2nd XV saw Fred Braddock and his team go down narrowly 20 points to 19, after CCC kicked a penalty goal with 4 minutes remaining.

Nick Moutevelis, Will Stanley, Lachie Onlsow, Bailey Perkins and Olly Fitzroy all featured in the 3rd XV who had a win against AICES, but then went down to CHS 2nd XV. Bailey and Olly both got tries in the first match, and Olly got a second in the loss to CHS.

The Under 16s had one win from two matches, with Zachary Flynn, Tommy Marren and Oli Aylmer doing the College proud.

Orange Weekend Away – 17 July 2021

St Pius X College travel to Kinross Wolaroi School on Saturday 17 July. Traditionally, many families use this as a weekend to getaway and to that end, the Rugby Supporters Club have organised dinner on the Friday night at the Lord Anson and put rooms on hold at the Mercure Hotel.

You can book directly with the Hotel on 02-63625611 and mention that you are part of the St Pius X College Chatswood Rugby Club booking for Friday 16th July.

If you were interested in staying at the Mercure Hotel we recommend you book in ASAP as we only have a limited number of rooms put on ‘hold’ – (obviously there are other accommodation venues in Orange that you may prefer to stay at, though as Orange is a major regional centre, accommodation can book out well in advance of events).

A bus will be available for those students who cannot make their own way to Orange which will depart Anderson Street Chatswood at 6:15 am and return at the conclusion of the 1st XV match. Students will be asked to sign up to get the bus with the coaches over the coming weeks.

Rugby Supporters' Club Committee Fundraising Events

The St Pius X Rugby Supporters' Club raise funds that go directly back into the Rugby program. In previous years, the Supporters' Club has provided significant funds for external coaching, rugby specific physio, tour contributions, tour clothing and kit etc.

Last year due to COVID-19, fundraising was put on hold, meaning the club is desperate to re-coup funds to contribute again during the 2021 season.

At the last Rugby Committee meeting, it was agreed that the three fundraising focuses this season would be a Monster Raffle, the Rugby Club Dinner (on Friday 30 July) and the Golf Day, held later in the year.

The success of these events relies on the support of everyone in the Rugby Community. Please support the events above through your attendance and through selling raffle tickets when they become available.

Another way you could help is by reaching out to your known contacts to donate prizes for the raffle and Rugby dinner. In the past, prizes have included accommodation in venues like Noosa and the Hunter Valley, services like photography sessions provided, not to mention memorabilia, tickets to events, toys or sporting gear for children, money can’t buy experiences with celebrities or adrenaline based activities to name a few. The rugby supporters committee is asking the community to come together and consider how they, or someone they know could donate to these events.

Please contact myself: JLynch@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au or Rugby Club President Paul O’Neill: paoneill21@gmail.com if you can contribute in any way.

ISA Tennis

Our players yet again about brought some great gameplay to the courts on Saturday. We were playing against St Pat’s, St Augustine’s, St Paul’s and St Spyridon’s but unfortunately our opposition teams were all too strong.

We now have our mid-season break, so we don’t resume the competition until Saturday, 17 July.

CSDA Debating Competition

Last Friday we travelled to Marist College Eastwood. Congratulations to the following teams who were successful on the night:  12B, 11A, 11B, 9A, 9B, 8A, 8B, 7A, 7B.

There will be no debating this week

There will be two Elimination Rounds:

  • Elimination 1 on Wednesday 16 June (Final week of Term 2) and
  • Elimination 2 on Friday 18 June (Final day of Term 2).

We are still awaiting final information on which teams will be included in which elimination rounds and information will be given to students at Friday's Assembly.  We can, however, we can happily confirm that our 9B team will go straight through to the Quarter Finals on Friday 16 July.  Congratulations to our great 9B team!

STUDENTS FINISH SCHOOL ON THURSDAY 17 JUNE BUT SHOULD PREPARE TO BE DEBATING ON THE FRIDAY EVENING, 18 JUNE.

TERM 3

Quarter Final, Friday 16 July

Semi Final, Friday 23 July

Grand Final, Friday 30 July

As you can see there is a long way to go to get to the Finals.  Congratulations to all of our coaches who have worked so brilliantly with their teams.  Each year group has its own social, emotional and intellectual needs and each of our coaches meet those needs and direct their students with such empathy for the stage of learning their group present. We are in awe of you all.  With this in mind,  it is essential to acknowledge Luke McManus, ex-SPX Debate Captain and current coach of the Year 11 teams for his guidance and determination, leading the 11B’s to a 6/6 win.  Leo Lovesy, ex-SPX Debater, who coached teams all through his time as a student, and who is obviously smashing it with the Year 9B’s with a 6/6 win. Mr Ryan Balboa who, each year, works with and mentors the entire senior SPX cohort, always welcoming Year 11’s into his Year 12 mid-week training sessions, and guiding the 12B’s to 5/6 wins. Finally, to Joshua Foley, ex-SPX Debater who has so much patience with our beautiful, beautiful ENERGETIC Year 7’s. Even though his hair has greyed a little in the last 8 weeks he shows obvious joy working with these intelligent, vibrant young men and has guided the 7B’s to 5/6 wins. Finally, I could not run debating without constantly running plans for travel and hosting past Miss Leigha Zervakos, Mr Ryan Balboa and Mr Justin Donnelly… I am so lucky and very grateful.

Mrs Michele Waterson - Debating and Public Speaking Convenor

Winter Squash

Round 6 of the NSW Squash Junior Pennant was held last Saturday. The firsts won their top of the table clash with Briars 2-1; well done to Luke Massa and Ben Christensen for their efforts in ensuring them a finals berth next term.

SPX 2 also had a well-deserved win at Thornleigh, congratulations to Ashley Johnson and Thomas Miles for their strong wins and Lachlan Miles for his determined effort.

Liam Kinna was the only winner for SPX 3 against Knox with Reuben Cuasay and Evan Barton performing well without victory.

SPX 4 defeated SPX 5, well done to Peter Yastreboff for winning his first competitive game of the season. I’m sure that many more will now follow.

SPX 6 played well to be narrowly defeated by Barker, all matches were very close fought. And SPX 7 went down to Knox.

I congratulate all squash players for their Term 2 efforts and encourage them all to get in as much practice as possible for Round 7 played in Week 1 of next term.
