Primary News

Mr Liam Beatty

This week I have been privileged to join colleagues from other Catholic independent schools in Queensland in an executive leadership program Leading with Integrity for Excellence: Governance for Catholic schools program. The program focuses on the enhancement of executive leadership capabilities in the area of management for school and system leaders in a Catholic context.

Yesterday we were fortunate enough to hear from Father Richard Leonard, a well-known Jesuit priest, scholar and author. Fr Leonard discussed the importance of Catholic schools as a faith-based community of learning, as well as some of the challenges facing the Church in recent years. Furthermore, he shared the following statistics about the Church which I thought may be of interest to you all:

  • The Catholic Church is the third-largest employer in Australia.
  • 770,018 students and almost 100,000 staff are in the Catholic sector across 1,751 schools.
  • Largest welfare provider outside the Government.
  • 80 Catholic hospitals provide over 12% of all hospital beds in the country.
  • SVDP is the largest and most extensive volunteer welfare network in the country with 18,209 members and 30,910 volunteers.

College Tour

Last Friday we welcomed over 200 prospective families to Marist College Ashgrove for the College Tour. This also provided me with a great opportunity to speak to our guests specifically about the Primary School and the special part it plays in the College. If you are aware of any families interested in finding out more about Marist College Ashgrove for their son, or you have younger siblings who may be interested in attending a tour, you can register for upcoming tours here.

Welcome

A big Marist welcome to Rafa Gonsalves (6B) and his family who have joined us in the Primary School this week from another Marist school, St David’s in South Africa. I know you will all make them feel very welcome.

NAPLAN

Congratulations to our Year 5 students who participated in NAPLAN testing over the past week. It was great to see the boys arrive at school each day with a positive attitude, ready to demonstrate their full potential across each of the tests. My sincere thanks to all our staff who ensured that our first experience on the online platform was a positive one.

A special Marist moment occurred last Tuesday as our Year 6 students created a guard of honour for their Year 5 buddies ahead of their first NAPLAN test. This gesture helped ease the nerves of the boys and reminded the youngest members of our community that they had the full support of their older peers.

Walkathon

As we continue fundraising for the Walkathon, the Primary School has extended our lead as the highest fundraising group in the College with over $4,310.00 dollars raised to date. Congratulations to Connor Campbell (6V) who coloured in the Walkathon Tally as our highest fundraiser for the week. If you are interested in assisting on the day as a volunteer, please register via this link - 2021 Walkathon Parent Volunteer Registration.
