Maths @ NHS 2016

Northcote HS Mathematics faculty would like to develop each student’s passion for understanding the real world through Mathematics. We emphasise problem and collaborative problem solving in our classrooms. We endeavour to develop students “21st century workplace” skills through challenging and motivating tasks that emphasise strategic/flexible thinking, decision making abilities, clear reasoning skills and creativity. To ensure students experiences in the classroom we expect all students have the appropriate materials available including: workbook, problem solving book (Y7-10), technology and calculators.

Math Support

The Maths Faculty provides Math support on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 – 4:50 pm. This is support is available in the upper B-block rooms including B12 / B13. The Math support team provides assistance and guidance for both Junior and Senior students. Students are recommended to arrive prepared with specific questions or tasks.  Students may also review content covered in class, engage in content above and beyond the scope of the curriculum, review assessment tasks, and receive support for problem solving activities and investigations.

Visiting artist in Studio Art

As part of Unit 3 Studio Art, we invited Sculptor Donald Stewart to give us a talk and workshop on sculpting techniques. Don has been a sculptor for over 30 years. He works mostly with papier mache and resin and his work focuses mainly on the human figure. He is also a passionate environmental activist in his local community in Port Fairy. Don talked to us about his ideas and inspirations and he also showed us a range of sculpting techniques, such as making small figurative sculptures using wire and newspaper, how to create a silicon mould from a small sculpture and resin application techniques on large scale sculptures. Under Don¹s direction, some of us made a small figurative sculpture based on our drawings. The sculpting process was very interesting and we have had a lot of fun making these figures, which will be finished in the coming weeks as part of our folio.
