Message from the

International and WELC Coordinator -

Ms Debby Morgan

WELC has had a very busy few weeks at the start of Term 3. We have had a large number of students join our Language Centre and now have a total of 70 students from about 17 different countries. We have also had two new teachers and 2 new multicultural aides join our staff.

About half of our Language Centre has been going off to Swimming lessons at the Doug Ellis Pool every Wednesday. These students are having a wonderful time learning basic swimming skills which are essential to life in Australia.

The remaining students have been doing a variety of activities at school including boardgames and lego. Students were challenged to take on a role of builder or instruction-giver and worked well together to make a variety of lego designs/pieces. You can see many of these in the photos in this newsletter. On Wednesday 17 August students participated in a Meet the Lifeguard activity where they were able to meet a lifeguard and learn about water safety. Students had fun demonstrating how to save someone from drowning.

All Language Centre students attended the Westall Athletics Carnival on Thursday 9 August.  Our students participated in a number of different events with many students winning a first, second or third place ribbons. We congratulate all students for getting involved and trying their best!

Parent Teacher interviews were held on Thursday 18 August on video calls. Many parents attended and heard feedback about their child’s progress. Progress Reports will be sent out soon. Students should look at these reports and try to implement the suggestions in the second half of this term so they can improve their English. Many of our students are expected to exit at the end of Term 3 and we encourage them all to use their remaining time at the Language Centre well in order to be the best prepared for their transition to their mainstream high school.

We also plan to go on an excursion to the Arts Centre in Week 7. This will give students the opportunity to take public transport, to have a look around Melbourne city and also tour the Arts Centre.

We hope students continue to work hard and improve their English in the final weeks of term!
