Assistant Principal's Report

iCreate Sport: MCG Tour/sports museum excursion

On Wednesday 17 August,  our iCreate sport students went behind the scenes at one of the country’s most iconic sports venues- then learned about the history of Australian sport and tested their skills in the interactive Game On exhibition. Student engaged well with the tour guides, enjoyed challenging themselves on the interactive games and represented the school really well throughout the day.

iCreate Sport: Coaching courses

In iCreate Sport Development in 2022, the teachers have endeavoured to not only build the skills of the students as participants in a range of sports, but as coaches too. With the program divided into a Volleyball and a Basketball academy for period 3 each week, student sin the basketball group undertook their Community Basketball Coaching Certificate in term 2. Next week, our volleyballers will begin a two-week VIP Volleyball Coaching course, learning key coaching skills and tactics from the best.

ALL students will have the opportunity complete their Miniroos Soccer Course later this term and their Level 1 Cricket coaching certificate in Term 4. All Nations AFL Clinics, courtesy of St Kilda FC, will also take place this term. A busy time in iCreate sport program, in Term 4 we hope to run some coaching clinics for our feeder primary schools!

Building Update

Preparatory work on our New Year 7-9 Learning Centre is well underway. We have completed the Schematic Design and Design Development phases, led by Minx Architecture and the VSBA. We are now finalising the cost plan and have begun the tender process, meaning that we are on schedule to commence works in Term 4 this year. For more information on the build, visit https://www.westallsc.vic.edu.au/news/viewitem/283.

Electric Scooters

Electric, or e-scooters, are becoming as popular method of transport and a number of students have been riding these to and from school. I would like to bring attention to the legal requirements for e-scooters, as set out by VicRoads. Students SHOULD NOT be riding a scooter to school that does not comply with legal requirements. Helmets should also be worn, as they are required to be with bicycles.

Motorised scooters (including e-scooters)

What is a motorised scooter?

A motorised scooter:

  • has the same features as a foot scooter
  • can be propelled by an electric motor with a maximum power output of 200 watts or less
  • is not able to travel faster than 10 km/h when ridden on level ground.

Is my scooter legal?

If your motorised scooter:

  • is powered by a petrol motor; OR
  • has an electric motor with a power output of greater than 200 watts; OR
  • has a speed capability of greater than 10 km/h

then it cannot be legally used on a road or any road related areas, including footpaths, shared paths or public areas (unless it meets the standards for registration and is registered). The fine for riding an illegal device in a public area is $909. Other penalties may also apply.

IMPORTANT: Most newer model e-scooters exceed these thresholds and do not meet the standards for registration, and therefore cannot be used on Victorian public roads or footpaths at this time; they can only legally be ridden on private property.

If any member of the community has any questions regarding the use of e-scooters and suitability for school, pleas contact a member of the Principal team of the Principal team.
