Foundation
Last week was a special one for the Foundation students as they celebrated on Wednesday 3rd August their 100 Days of School.
On Monday, we had our first visit from the Brunswick Fire Station as part of the Foundation Fire Ed program which is completed in all schools during the Foundation year. Ashlee, Brad, Tim and Rob discussed with the students the differences between “good” and “bad” fires. We were also shown how to get to the ground and crawl safely to an exit. The firefighters also discussed with the class the importance of having a safe meeting place outside the home in case there was ever an emergency situation and the students needed to evacuate their home. This week the firefighters will visit us again and show us the fire truck and the equipment that is used to fight fires. There will be time and opportunity for us to share our drawing of a safe meeting place that was drawn and discussed with parents as part of a follow-up to the first visit from the Brunswick Fire Station.
Well, what a day of celebration Wednesday was! There was great excitement as the FLW students arrived at school! They entered Saunders Yard walking under the balloon archway and into our learning space which was decorated with party hats, badges, balloons, a cake and show bags filled with many goodies.
Throughout the day much learning occurred celebrating the number 100. We read a story about the 100th Day of School, read a poem about the 100th Day of School, made and decorated cupcakes with Mrs Monoghan and had lunch with our buddies.
Mrs Wenckowski took many photos so that we could always remember this important day. We participated in fun learning activities such as the tower challenge where we tried to build a tower from unifix blocks in 100 seconds, we tried to guess how many pom poms were in the jar and we wrote 100 words. We counted and danced away the day celebrating reaching 100 Days of School.
The celebrations continued on Thursday as we came to school dressed as 101-year-olds. We had many photos taken of our outfits as we completed a parade in Saunders Yard for our parents and relatives.
Many thanks to everyone who supported our celebrations last week, and we look forward to more learning and fun times for the remainder of 2022.

Year 1/2
We are halfway through Term 3 already and it has been a fun and busy term, filled with so many wonderful learning opportunities and many more to come!
We have finally begun to engage in our beloved Discovery Time for Term 3. Our stations include paper aeroplanes, tinkering, space, shapes and construction that share a connection with our Inquiry Learning and Mathematical Thinking concepts.
As researchers, we are exploring the different ways we can make a paper aeroplane to test which design can fly the furthest. We are estimating and testing our creations and measuring the distance. As collaborators, we are working together to take apart old laptops and phones to take a look inside! We are using real tools and utensils to unscrew this technology. As curious thinkers, we have so many wonderings about how all the wires and chips work together to make these items work. Some things we have learnt from Discovery Time are:
- We could have lived on Mars but there was not enough oxygen - Juliano
- Tasmanian Devils are nearly extinct - Elliot
- Sound travels through the wires on a phone to make it work - Eponine
- I was being a researcher at tinkering by pulling apart laptops and phones. I was wondering what the wires were for and what the blue and green rectangles were for- Hudson
- I learnt at the paper planes table that you need to follow the instructions or your paper plane won’t work- Hazel
- I was being a researcher. I learnt about Space. I was reading books and I discovered Neptune is the coldest planet- Isaac M
As writers, we have been exploring how to create an interesting narrative. Through stories that we know and love, such as The Rainbow Fish and the Gruffalo, we are beginning to brainstorm adjectives that we could use to describe the characters and the setting from these stories. As researchers and thinkers, we have discovered that we can describe characters in many different ways such as appearance, feelings and personality. Through the use of mind maps, we have come up with a range of interesting adjectives like shimmering, harrowing and humongous, to describe and introduce our characters and the setting when writing a narrative. We are continuing to use Colourful Semantics to build on our sentences. Take a look at some of our work from our first go at introducing characters and the setting in a story.
We have so many exciting events coming up in the next week. We are starting our much anticipated Circus Lessons next week. We will be learning all about how we can move our bodies safely to perform. As thinkers, to unpack these lessons, we will be connecting them to one of our inquiry understandings, ‘How does the human body move?’ We will be finding out about our bones and muscles and how they work together to make us move. We will also be learning about the Commonwealth Games and how these athletes work hard to make their bodies move.
As a faith community, we are also beginning our Whole Class Mass on allocated Tuesday mornings. Parents, carers and friends are welcome to attend these sessions.
We are excited for another busy week of learning!
Year One/Two Team,
Alex Phillips, Alycia Marsico and Stefanie Carriera.
Year 3/4
As members of a Catholic community, the year 3/4 students investigated the four main parts of Mass. We found out the four parts are… We Gather, We Listen, We Give Thanks and We Go.
The students collaborated in pairs to create a lap book that showed the different parts of the Mass. Take a look at our learning!
We engaged in the Chalk Talk thinking routine to explore images of St Fidelis Primary School in the 1900s. When looking at the images the students reflected on these questions…
- What do you notice?
- What connections can you make?
- What wonderings do you have?
On Thursday, we tuned into 99.9 LIVE FM to listen to and support Mr Frazzetto and the STEM MAD students at the show. We are very proud of all of the students in Year 3/4!
We look forward to another week of learning!

Year 5/6
What a week it has been in year 5/6 last week! The students have been working so well together in our senior learning space and are to be commended on the mature and responsible manner in which they conduct themselves.
As part of the Resilience Project, the students had the opportunity to reflect on and share their “Happiest Memory”. The purpose of this activity was for the students to recognise the benefits of positive emotions and share their happy moments with their peers. This week the students will explore the little moments in life that make it awesome!
In Literacy, the students have been studying different picture story books to develop their understanding of an author's message and meaning behind a text. They have continued to use their knowledge of inferring and making connections to gain a deeper understanding of the stories we are reading. The students have also been working on writing an explanation text about the Life Cycle of a Frog. They have focussed on using technical language and appropriate structure to finalise their drafts.
In Numeracy, the students have been exploring angles and where we see angles in our everyday lives. We have been learning about how to use a protractor to measure angles. The students then used this knowledge to create an artwork of their name and identified the angels within it.
As Inquirers, the students are Tuning In to our Term 3 Big Question: How does Science contribute to a Healthy and Active Community? They have explored the science behind food production, nutrition and food packaging and how this branch of science contributes to our community.
On Friday our Year 6 students participated in their Holy Sacrament of Confirmation. We would like to congratulate all students involved in this special celebration. The students are to be commended on their reverence during Mass, they did a wonderful job and should be so proud of themselves. Thank you to all the parents and families for joining us on this special occasion.
We look forward to another wonderful week.
