Last Tuesday we drew the winners of the Women’s World Cup Quiz. Students had to correctly answer ten questions using clues from the library display. The competition was open to the whole school, and we had 20 full entries in total. 1st prize was a $30 Rebel Sports gift card, won by Ruby Elshout of 9 Silver, and the runner-up prize was a large box of Favourites chocolates, won by Isabelle Crowe, also of 9 Silver.

Author, George Ivanoff, came to share his love of writing with our year 7s last Monday. In the morning he entertained them with stories about his writing and reading excerpts from his books. He also passed on some valuable tips for them to use in their own creative writing. After recess he ran a writing workshop for the years 7s involved in our Make A Book In A Day activity. They spent time learning how to put a story together as a group, which is the big challenge of the MABIAD activity. George then stayed on during lunchtime to talk with the students involved in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. It was a great day full of encouragement for reading and creative writing. Some of George’s books are available for loan from the library.

Book of the Week

Scrublands

by Chris Hammer

Recommended for older readers.

A small country town is rocked when the local priest murders four men outside his church.

A year later, journalist Martin Scarsden arrives to write a story on the anniversary of the incident. He is met with scorn and suspicion, lies and simmering anger from most of the locals, but manages to make important connections with some. When a bushfire exposes a dark secret, Martin finds himself caught up in an elaborate web of lies, and he feels compelled to get to the bottom of the mystery – even if it means risking his own life.

Scrublands is set in modern-day Australia and has a very down-to-Earth feel. It is an excellent mystery-crime-thriller which will keep you guessing until the very end.
