Jaz at the Regional Athletics competition

From Ben, Physical Education Teacher

Regional Athletics

We are so proud of our five students who progressed to Regional Cross Country on the last week of Term 2. Jaz, Jonathan, Matthew, Xavier and Frieda had all been running so well in the lead up competitions and did so again at the Regional event. Braving the cold and pouring rain, they all put in magnificent individual efforts to run extremely well considering the poor weather! Not only did we have two students, Jaz and Matthew, progress to the State Championships, it was also pleasing to hear of Xavier going out of his way to assist a competitor from another school, jeopardising his own race to provide comfort and care to his opponent. What fantastic sportsmanship form Xavier!

We wish Matthew and Jaz all the best at the State Championship, to be held early this term.

Story by Matt L, Year 4

It was 10:15, the race was about to begin and my nerves were going crazy!!

On your marks – toot!!

We were off.

I had a great start.

I was 6ᵗʰ.

Two people passed me on my way up the hill and one more person passed me at the top of the hill. I was racing down the hill and gaining on three people.

Two people got away, but I was tailing one guy.

The second lap I was still on the St Mary’s guy.

In the last 300 meters, I finally past the St Mary’s guy. I sprinted to the hill finish line.

I came 9ᵗʰ.

Well done to Xavier, Jaz and Johnny and an extra congratulations to Sophie for making it so far at such a young age.

State Cross Country

What a magnificent effort by Matthew (4D) and Jaz (4F) to progress all the way through 4 levels of competition to make it to the State Cross Country Championships last week!

On what was a new and challenging course for all, both Matthew and Jaz ran incredibly well and did themselves proud in finishing in the mid 50’s out of 100 students in their age groups across the State. Amazing efforts from them both!

Thank you to their parents for assisting them to and from all of the competitions as they progressed through the ranks to take part at the State race.

We congratulate Matthew and Jaz on their efforts and our so proud of their achievements!

Story by Matt L, Year 4D

It was 11:05am and I was getting marshalled. I was getting ready for the race. At 11:25, the guy shot the gun and then we were off. I was passing people, people were passing me. At the first U-turn, I fell over onto my hands. I got back up and kept on running.

One kilometre left and my legs have adjusted to the course. I went through a really muddy part of the course. I turned the corner and onto the home straight. I passed two people and crossed the finish line.

Story by Jaz D, Year 4F

Towards the beginning of the year, I set a goal, a goal to make it to States. I knew I wasn’t going to get there by just having it as a goal, so I made a plan. I started running before school, doing hill sprints and longer runs on the weekends – no matter the weather!

I came 1st for School cross country, Districts and Divisions and 8th at Regionals. Last Thursday it was the big day - STATES. I finally got to compete at the State Cross Country Championships at Yarra Glen Race Track. There were ages nine to twenty competing.

We went to marshal in the jockeys room twenty minutes before the race, everybody was so nervous. It was all on grass, and so muddy, the mud was up to my ankles. It was really hard to run on it.

As I ran up the final straight I didn’t know, if I was going to make it, my legs were dying. I finally finished the race, I completed my goal! I was so happy!
