In our upcoming Literacy units, Level Five students will embark on an exciting journey of exploration and creativity. We will begin by delving into the world of explanatory texts, where students will develop their skills in analysing and understanding the structures and purposes of these texts. They will learn how to craft clear and concise explanations, using appropriate language features and organising their ideas in a logical manner. Through this unit, students will not only enhance their comprehension skills but also strengthen their ability to communicate complex concepts effectively.
Following the completion of the explanatory texts unit, we will dive into poetry. During this unit, students will be introduced to various poetic language devices, going beyond traditional rhymes and structures. They will explore the nuances of rhythm, tone, and flow in different poetry styles, while also mastering techniques such as figures of speech, sensory details, perspective, and sentence structures.
Moreover, students will expand their vocabulary, experimenting with words that convey precise meaning and evoke emotions in their writing. By doing so, they will uncover the power of author intention and the profound impact their words can have on others. Towards the end of our poetry unit, students will practise their spoken fluency through the accurate use of punctuation and grammar in formal presentations and performances by presenting selected pieces from their anthology collection.
To support your child’s learning at home, you could encourage them to:
- Use prompts such as ‘What strategies has this author used?’ ‘Why do you think the author selected these strategies?’ ‘What strategies have you used?’ ‘How have you practised your goal in your written piece?’
- Encourage your child to reflect on their own writing by asking them about the strategies they have used.
- Create opportunities for your child to practice oral presentations and performances.
