Discovery Centre

Curriculum

Halo semuanya - hello everyone!

Welcome to Foundation! It has been an amazing first week in the Discovery Centre and we have been blown away by the enthusiasm of all of our fantastic Foundation students.

Students went on a big tour of their new school where students got to see where their Specialist classes (Art, Performing Arts, Indonesian and PE) will be held as well as other important places such as the playground, garden and Library. Foundation students were given the opportunity to explore the Junior Playground and play areas in a separate play time to give them a chance to get comfortable with their new surroundings. They did a wonderful job of playing with the rest of the Junior School on Friday and asking a yard duty teacher for help if they needed it.

Our First Assembly
Our First Assembly

It was a busy week but students are adjusting well to new classrooms and routines. Each class worked together to come up with a set of class expectations that they think are important to make the classroom a safe and happy space. Some ideas included to always try your best, be kind to each other and listen to other people's ideas. We even practiced showing some of our class expectations during Assembly on Friday.

Orange folders were sent home this week and must be returned each day. This is in preparation for when your child takes home books for home reading, any work that they may like to share with you and occasionally important notices.

The next three Wednesdays are used for assessment - please note that this is not a school day for Foundation students, they are only required to come to school for their appointment time. This gives us an opportunity to get to know your child better and to see what they already know which allows us to teach to their point of need. Please drop off your child at the front office and collect them at the finish time. If you are unsure of your appointment time please contact the office for confirmation.

We look forward to another fun week next week! Some highlights this week were playing on the playground, listening to stories and pre writing activities to make our fingers and hands stronger.

Reminders

  • As we are a SunSmart school we ask that your child keeps their labelled school hat at school. You may also provide sunscreen for them to reapply throughout the day, your child's teacher will remind them to do so.
  • Eating Times - We provide Foundation students with additional eating time as they become more familiar with routines. Lunch: 10.40 (sandwich, pasta, rice, roll etc. and perhaps a piece of fruit). Snack 1:40 (fruit, yoghurt, popcorn etc.).
  • Please ensure you only pack water for your child to drink throughout the day. No flavoured milk or juice.
  • We will begin our Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) on Friday in Week 3 (Unfortunately we cannot have parents to help at this stage). This is a fantastic program that helps students develop a wide range of skills such as fine and gross motor, balance and coordination. Please ensure your child does not wear tights on this day as they need to remove their shoes and socks.
  • Specialist classes will begin next week. See the Foundation Specialist schedule below:
