School Council News

and Elections

On behalf of the School Council, it’s my pleasure to welcome you all to the Cheltenham Secondary College community for 2022. A special welcome to all new students, families and friends joining Cheltenham Secondary College for the first time this year, especially our new year 7s. It’s great to have started the year back on campus and I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which our community gathers, the Boonwurrung people of the Eastern Kulin nation. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging and to all First Nations members of the Cheltenham Secondary College community.

As you may have already noted in your Compass newsfeed, nominations are now open for 2022 School Council membership and I’d encourage you to consider getting involved.

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within statewide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.

School Council has a number of responsibilities including assisting in the efficient governance of the school, enhancing the educational opportunities of students at the school and ensuring that the best interests of students are considered in decision making.

It participates in the development and monitoring of the school strategic plan and school policy and plays an important role in overseeing the school’s financial operations and budget. Through its sub-committees, School Council also focuses particularly on student services, educational policy, engagement and communication, buildings and grounds, and finance.

If you have any questions about what’s involved or what to expect, please feel free to contact me via Andrew.Hall2@education.vic.gov.au. A reminder that nominations need to be received by 4.00pm on Wednesday 16th February – see your Compass newsfeed for further details.

The School Council looks forward to communicating with you throughout the year, via The Cheltonian newsletter, to keep you up to date on our activities. For now, though, stay safe, and all the best for Term 1.
