Faith

One of the key activities of Lent is almsgiving.  Traditionally, especially in Catholic Schools, almsgiving was always to raise money for the “missions.”  Caritas or Project Compassion is the key focus for our almsgiving in 2018.  The work of Caritas is world famous and our students are encouraged, through their RE teachers, to contribute to this great humanitarian work.  Not only is it humanitarian, it is also truly Christian.  Using the Church’s social teaching, our students, through the work of Caritas, are not only contributing to the arresting of the plight of others but also, in a concrete way, living out their Baptismal Promises.

In my own RE classes, I have challenged the students to “offer up” $1.00 a day for the 40 days of Lent.  My Year 11 class in particular have been most enthusiastic.  If this class reaches its aim, we will have raised just over $900.00.  All other RE classes are invited to contribute the same.  Please, however possible, assist your son or daughter in the promotion of this worthy cause and, in doing so, you are helping others, helping our students live out their Lenten responsibility and helping change the world – a $1 at a time.

Loving Father, the love that Jesus has for each of us was evident in his life and in the sacrifice of himself.

Help each of us in our struggles to accept our suffering as Jesus did,

and to work toward healing with knowledge of the love that Jesus has for us.

May we be a source of comfort and strength for each other as we help each other carry our crosses.

Amen.
