This term, in addition to studying texts, all students in Year 7 to Year 10 will have some emphasis placed on public speaking in preparation for the traditional competition which will occur early in Term 4. Year 10s will study a novel in conjunction with First World War poetry, which will help them in respect of the new VCE study design.

Planning for Improvements
We hope all ourMmaths students enjoyed a great break over the school holidays and are now ready to embrace the challenges of Semester 2 and the final 100 school days of the year. Planning for improvements at school involves a number of key actions. These include students:
- Reflecting on their school reports and taking note of what has been done well and the suggested areas for improvement.
- Setting up specific actions and targets to implement these improvements.
- Working with teachers and fellow students to assist in these endeavours.
- Spending time to reflect on progress towards these goals.
- Asking for advice and assistance as they go.
Many students find it difficult performing well in exams and have this as a common area for improvement. Some of our students only experienced their first formal exams in June this year. Whatever the situation, having a plan and preparing well for exams is a skill students refine over their years at school. As they progress into Semester 2 studies, we ask all students to reflect on their study habits and target improvements related to preparations for tests and exams.
All our VCE Year 12 Maths students should be continuing to prepare for their end of year exams. They can access trial and past VCAA exams and support video tutorials via our MGSC Maths Google and Classroom sites. Teachers will also be preparing revision packages for each of our Year 12 Maths subjects.
ICAS Maths Competition
We are keen to involve our students in a range of Maths competitions. This exposes them to some very useful exam type conditions and a rich set of more challenging maths problems. A key element of this co-curricular program is the ICAS Maths Competition which involves thousands of students from across Australasia. This will be held during Period 2 on Tuesday 15 August 2017, with participation from our Year 7 to Year 10 students. Specific papers are set for each year level. They comprise 35 multiple choice and five free response questions to be completed in 60 minutes. (Year 7 without calculators, others with calculators). Students are able to practise using resources on this site www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/prepare/practice_questions
