College Matters

Farewell

As was recently announced by Linda Brown via Compass Newsfeed I have been offered and have accepted the position of Principal at Parkdale Secondary College.  The timeframe of this appointment was very short and meant that I did not return to MGSC at the start of Term 3.

I take this opportunity to thank all members of the MGSC community for their support over the last two and a half years in my role as Assistant and Acting Principal.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at MGSC and wish everyone the best for the future.

School Council Report

This is my first year on the Mentone Girls’ Secondary College Council. My daughter Madison is in Year 11 having transferred across from Kilbreda College for the 2017 academic year, due to the wider range of subjects Mentone Girls’ offers. I have been most impressed with the workings of the Council, with the insights and input from the Principal, Assistant Principals and staff and parent representatives.

Being on the School Council provides a greater appreciation of what the College achieves on a daily basis, a snapshot of examples include:

  • The recent 10 Year Reunion indicates a strong alumni of past students wishing to remain connected to the College.
  • Mentone Girls’ association with both the Alliance of State Girls’ Schools and Alliance of Girls’ Schools (State and Independent) strengthens the College’s focus on how young women learn best.
  • Recent Performing Arts events.
  • The Year 7 Famous Women in History Expo.
  • A visit to the College by local Member of Parliament Murray Thompson.
  • The mid-year exams and student reports.
  • On-going ground and building works.

I would encourage all parents to support the initiatives of the Principal and her Management Team.

International Student Program

Again we have another exciting week as our new students from China commence in the ELC for their intensive English language learning. At the same time, a Study Abroad student from Brazil, Mariana Amaral do Prado Castro, will begin Year 11 classes. Mariana will be with us for six months. The College will have the opportunity to welcome our new students at the next assembly, however, I know that the whole school community will welcome our new students and support them in the coming weeks.

Last week, both Ms Brown (Principal) and Ms Roberts (International Studenet Coordinator) departed for two weeks to Vietnam to advertise our College to potential international students, parents and agents. This is our first time to Vietnam, and we wish them a safe and successful venture.

Disabled parking on grounds

There are two disabled parking bays in the main carpark. They are needed and frequently used by MGSC families with official disabled parking permits. Please only park in signed disabled bays if you have an official disabled parking permit. There are four visitor parking spots in the main carpark and many short and long term parking options on Charman Road.
