Head of Senior Secondary Update

The Senior School has been a hub of activity with the Year 10/11 examinations and assessment panels and showcase evenings. VCAA examinations continue for our Year 11/12 students on the VCE pathway. These exams are externally supervised under strict conditions. We commend our students for their diligent application to their studies during this period.

The purpose of Head Start is to facilitate an introduction to VCE and VM studies for 2023. The program covers the range of subjects across the Senior School and students should expect to have some important tasks to complete during the Christmas holiday break. Year 10 Science Update

Year 10 Science students finished their Astronomy unit by learning about the big bang theory and comparing this to Creation. Throughout the unit they completed activities including making a pinhole camera to work out the distance to the sun, observing the doppler effect, drawing the star cycle, and using a star map to make observations of the night sky. This week, students have been completing their exams and will be starting their Year 11 subjects next week. Well done Year 10’s for an excellent year’s work.

Rocks and Minerals PD

On Wednesday 9 November, some of Bayside's Secondary teachers had the opportunity to participate in a Rocks and Minerals Professional Development afternoon.

This was facilitated by the "Teacher Earth Science Education Programme" who flew a guest speaker in from Tasmania. As both 'Rocks & Minerals' and 'Tectonic Plates' are part of the Year 8 Science curriculum for 2023, TESEP offered this informative session free of charge.

As a participant Victorian school we were also given a fabulous free rock kit and access to an online rock viewing program and other cool resources sure to engage students in this topic. We also learned a number of facts we weren't previously aware of, for example that specialised surgeon's scalpels are made of Obsidian.

A big 'thank you" to Wendy Graham for spotting this opportunity and helping us organise it. TESEP has many more interesting PDs we are now aware of and will be considering in the future.

2022 VCAL Christmas Hamper Drive for Pantry Plus

The 2021 VCAL Christmas Hamper program was so successful with almost 30 hampers that we are running it again this year. These hampers will be sent to Peninsula City Church and they will distribute them through their Pantry Plus program and Somerville Primary for people in desperate need of practical support and compassion this Christmas.

It would be sensational if students could provide the following non-perishable goods for these hampers by Friday 18 November.

Homegroup teachers will collect these goods before the VCAL students pack them into Christmas boxes. Our VCAL students will also be making Christmas Cards with messages of hope and celebration for the families, who receive them. Thank you for your contribution, it is greatly appreciated. Year level donations are outlined below:

Year 11: Canned Leg Ham

Year 10: Shortbread or Fruit Mince Pies

Historical Event: Remembrance Day and New College Memorial

A big “Thank you” to our school’s Property and Maintenance Team who in the last two weeks have installed a war memorial and constructed a ceremonial enclosure in front of the flagpoles on North Campus.

This beautiful venue will be used for a Remembrance Day ceremony to be held this Friday 11 November starting at 11.35am.

A big “Thank you” also goes to the Year 9 Student Leaders, who will be assisting in the presentation of the Remembrance Day Service.

Year 11 VCAL Showcase

The Year 11 VCAL class did a brilliant job coordinating a Showcase event for their families and staff last week. They organised the food, MC’d the night, ran a trivia competition, organised the tech to work properly and each presented one project they worked on this year. This is a brilliant celebration of the students learning in 2022.

VCAL Design Technology and Industry

James Seide and Justin Mason have been working with Year 11 VCAL students to design and build two large projects for the North Campus. One group is making a fixed Table Tennis table, which will cope with students sitting on it and the other is building a weatherproof information board for the Agriculture program.

Both of these projects will be sensational for Bayside students for a long time to come. Thanks so much to Mr Mason and Mr Seide for running these projects.

Pantry Plus

Year 11 students visited Peninsula City Church to work with Hans and Lenie from the Pantry Plus team. They cooked over 80 meals for people who are struggling in our local community and learned a great deal during this session.

Some other students also helped to pack Samaritans Purse “Operation Christmas Child” boxes. We very much appreciate this community partnership with PenCC as it helps students to fulfil volunteer hours for their Certificate II in Active Volunteering and is a huge blessing to other people.

Bushrangers Bay and Cape Schanck Excursion

The Year 10 VCAL students attended an awesome trip to Cape Schanck and Bushrangers Bay as a part of the ‘Great Outdoors’ unit of work. They had a practice cooking session on gas hiking stoves at school and then prepared for a cooked lunch on the beach at Bushrangers Bay. The did a great job cooking in small groups and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Thanks to Kathy Scott for coming along on the day.
