Maths Week

How many hand high are you?

Horses and Numeracy Week arrive at Greenvale Primary School.

We are so excited to launch Numeracy Week! I wonder how many students are the same hands high as a Clydesdale? How many Shetlands? Do we have Thoroughbreds here at GPS? I wonder…

Throughout the week, students will participate in a range of exciting mathematical challenges, games and activities. We will be looking at horses through a maths lens, exploring questions such as:

How much hay does a horse eat in a day, in a week in month?

How much does the biggest horse weigh?

What is the smallest horse in the world? How tall is it? What does it weigh?

How long have horses been around and what have humans used them for?

What other animals are measured in hands?

How long is a horses’ stride? How does this compare to ours? Can you run as fast as a horse?

Horses with their fascinating habits, personalities and various breeds provide us with a fantastic lens to explore mathematics with a real world context.

In addition to classroom focused mathematics, we have a variety of whole school activities. These include:

Wednesday 2nd November

  • Come dressed as your favourite mathematician, number or maths concept you like (google maths themed dress ups for ideas).
  • Variety of maths activities in each classroom.

Thursday 3rd November

  • Lunch time Maths Games in the Gym.
  • Melbourne Cup Team Maths Quiz.
  • Biggest and smallest horse weight and height (F – 2 height in hands) and (3-6 weight in kgs).

Friday 4th November

  • Fashions on the field where students are encouraged to wear their best, most interesting, fun head piece. Ideas include wearing a horse on a headband, a bowler hat, fascinator or other creation!

Please feel free to send your child to school with their favourite horse book, photos or other paraphernalia if they have any to share with their class.

The maths team are excited and can’t  wait to see all of the wonderful games and maths activities throughout the week.
