Year 8 and Fusion

Year 8 has just handed in an assessment task on Japanese Anime and Manga. During the unit they read and watched several manga and Anime, like Dragon Ball Z and Astro Boy. They were then tasked with creating their own manga character and using this to plan a 20 box storyboard. Below are some of the great characters:

Recommendation #1: When Friendship Followed Me Home by Paul Griffin

A beautiful story that focuses on the heartwarming relationship between a young boy and a homeless dog. The main character, Ben Coffin, has always felt like he never fitted in anywhere, he has finally found a loving home when tragedy strikes. I never wanted this book to end, and cried buckets of tears. Be warned it does deal with issues of illness and grief. It made me want to hug my cats even tighter.

When Friendship Followed Me Home shows us that ‘if we can open our hearts to one another…lives can change in big and wonderful ways.’ - Rebecca Stead

Suitable for: Everyone from Year 7

Recommendation #2: If Not Us by Mark Smith

A book for our older readers, set in Tasmania, a young boy unexpectedly becomes the face of an environmental campaign. Living in a sleepy coastal town, the town is heavily reliant on the local mine. The mine is in danger of closing, an exchange student moves to town and the protagonist struggles to find his place. Deals with issues of climate change, romance, fast cars, mental health and growing up.

‘A blast to read, filled with earnest romance, great drama and some brilliant descriptions of surfing…a story that recognises both the power of mass movements, as well as the importance of individual participation.’ - Readings Monthly

Suitable for: Year 9 and up.
