Magis report

John XXIII  College will have two teams competing in the first round of the WADL Debating Finals this coming Tuesday, 10 August at 6:15pm at Perth Modern School.

Congratulations  to the two successful teams, the Year 8 Novice 2 team of  Oliver Grant Smith, Cooper Vincent, Josh Tyson and Austin Vujcich  and the Year 7 Novice Team 5 of Catherine Gazia, Charlie Pronk, Noa Mintz, Sasha Pallis and Tom Beach. Warmest thanks to Ms Shane Glass and Ms Kirralee Dawson for their wonderful support of these teams.  A summary of arrangements including the map of Perth Modern School is attached below.  Our Years 11 and 12 WADL teams competed against each other in the final make-up round this week, and Year 11’s won, with both sides debating very well. The Year 8 Team 3 lost to MLC, but were also impressive.

A record 45 students from Years 7,8 and 9 will be attending the Magis Camp at the beautiful Point Walter site  this coming weekend.  Accommodation is being finalised, and a hard copy given to students at the camp. Most rooms will be accommodating three or four students. All rooms have bathroom facilities.  A camp instruction sheet is attached below,  and the colourful camp handbook will be emailed out on Wednesday.

The final Challenge in the House Academic Championship series, Language-Literature, is now happening. Years 11 and 12 completed their challenge on Thursday with Ward successful at Year 12 and Koolyangarra at Year 11. Campion was strong in both years, and it was great to see all houses had full teams – some with up to 12 competitors. The Years 7/8 section is on Monday and Years 9/10 on Friday. Full results will be announced in week 5, along with the Creative Writing Competition results. Short stories are now being judged by a panel of three at each year level.

Our three Creative Edge Challenge and one Tournament of Minds teams are now working hard preparing for finals on the weekend of 28 & 29 August, whilst the Drone and Dungeons and Dragons Clubs are now in full swing again thanks to Mr Damien Connellan.
