BBPS Life

Pippa, Oscar and Harvey

The above picture shows Pippa, Oscar and Harvey constructing a bird feeder and planters, and is a perfect example of how everyday activities can be an integral part of the learning experience of children who are learning from home. These kids are developing their fine motor skills, learning how to interpret instructions, using communication skills to cooperate with one another, and creating an opportunity for further learning through retelling or explaining this experience. As Kim and Bev so often say - do what works for you. You'd be surprised how much your kids will learn from cooking, gardening, and helping around the house and noticing nature when out walking, riding or running and keeping a tally of kms for Awesome August!

Check out the amazing sunset snapped by Bev yesterday.

Take a look below at some of the other learning that has been happening across the school this fortnight.

Prep

We have loved reading some of the weekend writing that our preps have been producing (Take a look at Oscar's writing below). In Maths, preps have been consolidating their understanding of subtraction and have started to explore 2D and 3D shapes.

The word of the week, "Tray", has also seen our preps piling up objects from home onto trays across Bayside.

In reading, we are looking at the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts, and exploring their features.

Our preps have also relished our specialist subjects:

Art - drawing amazing giraffes!

Performing Arts - listening to magic songs and letting their imaginations run wild.

Japanese - Identifying the olympic ring colours, in Japanese.

And finally, in Social and Emotional Learning we have been focusing on mindfulness, and we encourage you all to take moment to be present.

Grades 1 and 2

The Olympic games are over, but our grade 1 and 2 students continue to produce gold in their Breaking News presentations. This round of Breaking News we have asked students to research an olympian, including their sport, their history and achievements.

Small group reading this week has been a great way to engage with books. Our literary detectives have been looking for clues in the text, using their skills of "predicting and inferring".

Maths - You may have noticed your kids putting stoned, buttons and other items into equal groups as part of their exploration of multiplication.

Grades 3 and 4

Highlights for this week have been inquiry projects on climate change and what we can do to make a difference.

Writing has been all about limericks (see Rhys's space themed limerick below).

For Social and Emotional Learning we have asked students to tell us what they are grateful for and what they are looking forward to. What are you grateful for?

Grades 5 and 6

Our senior students have been embracing Poetry. They have loved exploring repetition and figurative language in Alex Dang's "What Kind of Asian Are You", and investigating the

Poetry Slam genre and the use of analogies in "To This Day" by Shane Koyczan.

And even though we are currently not able to travel overseas, our Globetrotters challenge for Inquiry has seen students immerse themselves in the culture of various international destinations. Students have chosen a country they have never been to and are taking us on a tour, including researching facts, exploring cuisine, sights and sounds.

Special shout out to Pieter and Louis for their motivational movie clip promoting Awesome August - check it out here.
