Term 3
We are getting into the swing of creating some Pirate Art this term, starting with the junior classes designing and constructing some pirate hats.
Student revisited the basics of scissor handling, folding paper, tracing patterns and using engineering skills to make symmetrical pirate hat shapes. Cats, love hearts, stars, flowers, butterflies, dinosaurs and pirate ships became interpretations of the familiar pirate symbol The Jolly Roger, skull and crossbones. We worked together to patiently measure our heads and position pegs to create an accurate fit. We learned that sometimes a refit of our hat is necessary - especially if our hat was custom made just for us!
Every time I see one of these beautiful bird sculptures, I remark at the attention to detail and the skills mastered by the students. Clay has been a favourite material over the last term. We will be continuing to use clay in Term 3 too!
Sweet little textured nests complete with tiny eggs are the creations made by Grade 3. Can you see the way the oil pastel colour has created bright highlights? The junior students used this technique to decorate their bird tiles. Painting over with black makes the bright colours POP! Gorgeous - just gorgeous Grade 3’s!
Grade 4 students made hollow shapes and carefully modelled them into sweet birds. We explored warm and cool colour gradients to paint the background of the bird. To add detail, we observed pattern and line created by using dots alone. The results are impressive. Grade 4 artists, you have excelled!
Grade 5 and 6 ceramic bird baths have been fired in the kiln and have come up beautifully glossy and brightly coloured.
Take a look at the photo below. Note the tiny details in the painted underglaze decorations and the little birds sitting on the edge. These creations are exquisite! Well done Grade 5 and 6’s - your patience and attention to detail has paid off!
