Italian Term 3

 

This term is an exciting term for the Italian program with our biennial Italian day celebration occurring on Monday 6 September. The students have been busy practising their grade level songs for our whole school assembly and enthusiastically planning their possible costumes and outfits for the day. 

 

Many activities have been planned, including a Tarantella music and dance workshop by ‘Rosa and Filippo’ and a bilingual comedy show performed by ‘La Comica Variety Productions.  Please check Compass soon for further information. 

 

Italian Program Term 3     

Foundation

This term, Foundation students will revisit, recycle and review language from first semester through social interactions, during roll call, songs, games, and class activities. They will also be learning and exploring new language as they follow Pinocchio to the fair through the shared reading of the story ‘Zucchero Filato’ (Fairy Floss). They will learn to use expressions such as “Smettila” and “Permesso” and build on their vocabulary for foods eaten at a fair. They will be introduced to words for some common foods they eat and compare them with the foods children from Italy may eat. The students will also be learning some vocabulary for family members through the story ‘Il Mio Fratellino’ (My little brother) and share activities they do with their family through illustrations and copying Italian language to label their work.

Grade 1/2

Students will be learning to say the Italian alphabet and make comparisons with the English alphabet. They will be building on their vocabulary as they investigate words for each of the letters using simple bilingual dictionaries, word lists and charts and will be creating a class alphabet book. 

The students will also complete a unit of work based on the story ‘La Macchinetta Rossa’. (The little red car). They will be exposed to a range of language associated with giving orders, greetings and taking leave. They will also become familiar with some Italian images, symbols, cities and landmarks.

 

Grade 3/4

Will be learning key words and phrases used to describe the weather and the vocabulary for the four seasons. They will use the language to read and interpret weather maps and symbols, weather reports and to write a simple weather forecast. They will learn a song about the weather and write their own verse to the song. The students will also be comparing the weather and seasons in Italy, in the Northern Hemisphere, with Australia, in the Southern Hemisphere. 

 

Grade 5/6

Grade 5/6 will be building their vocabulary for clothing items and related adjectives. They will be learning to say what they and others are wearing and write descriptions. Students will apply rules of grammar, word order and apply noun adjective agreement in gender and number. They will be exploring Italian fashion and shopping website as they go on a virtual shopping trip, translating and interpreting the language as they select, list, describe and price items they would like to buy. The students will also have the opportunity to design their own outfit and write descriptions using vocabulary and phrases they have learned during the unit.
