SCHOOL NOTEBOOK VS BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE

Most of you will know that we offer a notebook that you can purchase through the school. I am pleased to say we have reached nearly 75% of eligible students.

In 2017 we are going to offer students the chance to Bring Their Own Device or BYOD. We really want all students in our classes to have the option of using a notebook.

Notebooks are used by students to maximize opportunities for learning, while promoting communication and collaboration between themselves, staff and parents. For the vast majority of students, digital technologies are embedded into their day to day lives.  These technologies can be used effectively as a tool to support learning.

We do not want to replace teaching with a room full of young people looking at screens. But we do want to have the option of using a device when it is of benefit to a young person's learning. We know we can get the balance right in our school.

As a school we still think buying a school notebook is the best option. It offers the best chance of keeping notebooks in our students hands as often as possible. We offer technical support and a warranty that will repair or replace a device if it stops working, is damaged or dropped. Repairs usually happens within a day or two. (We do need our students to tell us there is a problem though!)

The other option is to bring a device from home. We are happy to connect it to our filtered web and our storage areas. This is the extent of our support. Students are responsible for ensuring software they require is installed and working prior to a class. This option brings its challenges and can slow down class progress if machines are not capable of the demands we ask.

However we are happy to work through this challenge if it means we can reach that last 25%!

For Secondary Students in 2017 we will continue to offer our school notebook program along with our extended Bring Your Own Device program

COLLINGWOOD COLLEGE 1ST AID AREA INFORMATION-2017

Welcome to the 2017 school year to all in our school community and especially our new school families.

Our school works in partnership with parents and carers of students to ensure students (and staff) with ongoing and/or occasional medical needs have the appropriate school wide support and understanding for what could be complex medical issues.

Therefore it is with the up most importance that parents and carers provide the correct and in-date medical documentation and information directly to the school as well as all in-date medicines needed at the start of the 2017 school year.

Please click on the link below to read about the documentation you need regarding your child's medical needs.

MATHEMATICS AT COLLINGWOOD COLLEGE

INVITATION TO PARENTS

Dear Parents of Years 5 to 8

You are invited to come along to the college next Wednesday 22nd February at 6.30 pm in the Library to get a brief introduction to some of the new strategies we are using in Mathematics classes.

One of these strategies at Years 5 to 8 is a program called “Scaffolding Numeracy in the Middle Years”. This program was developed by experts at RMIT and helps children develop the foundations of understanding numbers and working with numbers.

Come and have a look and try some of the activities your children will be doing.

KITCHEN GARDEN

Welcome to 2017 Collingwood students and families.

Collingwood College students participate in our Kitchen Garden Program as part of their school curriculum in Grades 3-6. Garden classroom occur outside in all weather conditions, with students learning, exploring and practising the skills and knowledge to grow a diverse range of vegetables, fruit and herbs using organic growing methods. Students then harvest our seasonal produce for cooking a range of (95% vegetarian) delicious dishes in their kitchen classroom. The student’s learn and practise kitchen skills, techniques and terminology and importantly their communication skills, creativity and teamwork while dishes are prepared.

Students, staff and volunteers sit at beautifully set tables sharing these dishes created, respectfully voicing opinions for all our students learning efforts in these unique classrooms. Knowledge is documented in Kitchen garden books and shared to our school community via email, E/news, display boards and of course by our students.

An integral part of the enjoyment and richness of the classroom experience for our students is the depth of volunteering input we have for our school program. These exceptional people of all ages, interests, backgrounds and skills ensure our curriculum goals are supported for our students.  Potential volunteers do not need garden or cooking experience! Personal interest in supporting students and teachers, good humour, supporting our program philosophy of diversity, seasonality, sustainability & respect in growing and cooking seasonal food, ability to commit to a day/time are attributes we value in our volunteers.

We welcome applications from person in our school community, or friends/family wish to apply to be a Kitchen garden volunteer, please send an email to me at

Insall.desley.d@edumail.vic.gov.au

Please look at our school website (K.G page), if you are new to our school community for more information. Classes run in kitchen and garden Monday-Wednesday.

For those who may want to support our students and teachers in another way-we are always thankful for people to garden outside class times or on other days. Tours for potential volunteers will be occurring next week on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. And last about 40 minutes.
