Intermediate Boys Rugby

On Thursday 13 August, thirteen boys from Year 9 and 10 represented the school¹s first ever rugby team.  The boys took to the field after months of training and drills led by their coaches Gino Salima and Francis Vui of 12V.

After a long wait for their first game (which gave them time to practise a few more Œplays¹), the boys came up against Keilor Downs Secondary College. Excellent tries were made by Mario Salima, Laumape Taufeulungaki, Sang Le, Taani Taufeulungaki, Tipeni Isaako and Buku Khamis, and by the end of the match, St Albans were victorious 10-1.

In their second match, the team faced their biggest rivals: Victoria University, and their third team.  It was a hard fought match, but again some excellent plays involving strength at the back and centre from Faasee Samuelu, Joseph Afiafi and Justin Atonio, coupled with quick movement out on the wings form Maxwell Siaifoi Kelekolio, Bill Duong, and Christian Solo saw the boys at a draw 2-2 at half time.  The second half saw a number of well timed tackles from David Ngo and the back line that stopped VU scoring a number of times.  The score at the end was 3-4 and despite their disappointment, the team came together with a team chant and shouts of ŒSaint Albans.¹

Into the semi finals, the team came up against VU¹s second team, who unfortunately were just too strong.  There were a number of very good tries scored, and stopped, and the final score was close.

A great day was had by all who went.
