National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2015 Results

This week we received the results of the Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN tests in literacy and numeracy.

A package with individual results will be posted home next week to each Year 7 and 9 family who had a child sit the test.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s NAPLAN information, please contact your child’s Year Level Coordinator or Ms Cathy Armstrong, Literacy Assistant.

As a school, look at what the NAPLAN data tells us about how well our students are progressing in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation, and Numeracy as they move from Year 7 to Year 9.  It shows that they are improving at a faster rate than the state average, and that the results for Numeracy and Spelling are above state level at Year 9.

Year 12 VCE:  Preparing for the final exams

All Year 12 VCE students are required to attend school and sit practice exams in each of their VCE subjects during the next school holidays (21-25 September).  A copy of the Practice Exam time table will be distributed to all students, and this information will also be available on the student and parent portal .

Year 12 students also have access to our brand new study centre adjoining the school library. This facility is open until 4.30pm each day. Senior students may use this time to complete work requirements, SACS and Exams.

VCE Tutoring Program

This year we are also fortunate to have a number of high achieving graduates of St Albans Secondary College return to the school to tutor our current students in a range of VCE subjects.  This is a good opportunity to revise topics, practise exam questions and to hear directly from past students about study tips and revision strategies that ensure success in the exams.  We encourage all Year 12 VCE students to take advantage of this extra support. Thanks to all of our alumni for generously giving up their time and sharing their skills.

Celebrating Science Week

Our school celebrated science and technology during National Science Week from 15-23 August. The week is an important opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits and to encourage students to become fascinated by the world we live in.

The theme this year is "Making Waves - the Science of Light".   Light and light-based technologies are a part of most modern technology, from mobile phones to laser shows. Students participated in a diverse range of activities throughout the week including Science makers workshops, Science trivia, Sci-Ku (Haiku with a science slant) and a wave and light show.

The whole staff was also treated to a Science themed morning tea which included delights such as eyeball sponge cakes, PH balanced jelly, and  test tube cookies. Thanks to  the Science department for organising this interesting and fun filled week.
