Middle School Report

The focus of the past few weeks has been on course counselling and subject selection for 2016. The careers and counselling process we have at SASC is very thorough and second to none. Students are carefully counselled through the subject choices and hopefully they will be satisfied with their choices. This can sometimes be a difficult time for students but given all the information they need makes the process easier.

The Beacon Bonanza day was a huge success. The Beacon ambassadors, with the direction of Mr McFarland, put a great deal of thought and planning into the day to ensure its success. Students met with various people from various professions and trades. This experience coupled with recent work  experience provided further food for thought for the students in their subject selections. The students also heard from Travis Dempsey, ex drummer for the famous Australian band Living End. He spoke to students about his life and experiences. Life wasn’t always easy for Travis but he had a determination to ‘write his own chapter’ once he was old enough to do so. He spoke of the importance of community and encouraged the students to think about what they can offer to others. It was a very inspiring talk.

Beacon Bonanza Day

Year 9 students saw a play called ‘Cheap Thrills’ which was organised by the Wellbeing team. The audience went on an emotional roller coaster as the lead character experiences the consequences of drugs, alcohol and risky behaviour.

This fast paced one man show is about that split second when we reach a crossroad, make a choice, and possibly change our lives forever.

Andy and his friends drink alcohol, smoke marijuana and are confused by the hormones racing around their bodies. This dangerous cocktail explodes into one dramatic incident resulting in the loss of their mate Jamie.

Evidence of his sister Phoebe smoking and getting drunk ends up on YouTube. His dad drowns his sorrows in alcohol, mum pops painkillers to handle stress and his girlfriend has access to ecstasy.

After a lively discussion the audience left the PAC with a deep understanding of how their choice of friends and their ability to make good decisions has a dramatic and lasting effect on their lives.

Coordinators will be interviewing students in the next few weeks and reviewing the progress reports. These are available on the portal. Please make sure you have a look and we look forward to seeing you for parent/ teacher interviews on the 1st of September.
