Principals' Update

SWPBS Showcase

On Monday, Emily, Jesse, Billy and Keith attended the regional School Wide Positive Behaviour Showcase. A range of schools presented aspects of their SWPB practice and shared what has worked well in supporting the wellbeing and behaviour of students. Carlton North Primary School was also presented the bronze award for implementing the essential features of tier one school wide positive behaviour support with fidelity. A great achievement.

Working Bee

We will be having a brief Working Bee on Saturday between 10:30am - 12:30pm to help prepare the bluestone garden beds for planting. We will also be finishing off the raking of soft fall onto the playground areas. Hope to see you there.

NAPLAN Update

NAPLAN tests have been proceeding smoothly this week. We have had no technical issues and the children have been confident and have managed the testing process well. If students have missed tests due to illness, make up tests will be available next week if required. Please contact the school as soon as possible should you require a make up test.

IDAHOBIT

Every year on 17 May, people around the world celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, discrimination against intersex people and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

IDAHOBIT provides an opportunity for communities to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex, queer and questioning (LGBTIQ+) diversity and inclusion.

IDAHOBIT was established in 2004 to draw attention to the violence and discrimination LGBTIQ+ people face around the world.

The 17 May date commemorates the World Health Organisation’s 1990 decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

IDAHOBIT is celebrated in more than 130 countries around the world.

School Tours

Tours for prospective foundation students will be held on Tuesday 17th May between 9am and 12:30pm. Our year 6 students will be conducting the tours. They met with Olivia, Maddi and Keith this week to prepare to undertake this important leadership role. The leadership team will also be present during the tours to answer questions and talk with prospective community members.

School Crossing

Yarra City Council have informed us that families need to be aware that on occasion, there will be no school crossing supervisor. This is due to staff shortages as a result of Covid. The agency have advised us that they will inform the school if a crossing supervisor will not be on site. We will endeavour to notify families as soon as we receive this information.

Trivia Night

Our trivia night is on this Friday the 13th of May and is sure to be a great night. So much hard work has gone into the preparation of the night from parents in the community and this is very much appreciated. In order to make the night as COVID safe as possible we ask that all community members consider doing a RAT test prior to attending the evening. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Flu Season

With borders opening and the arrival of colder weather, cases of influenza (the flu) are increasing throughout Victoria. Our community is at risk of higher rates of students and staff affected by the flu or COVID-19 this season.

What to do if your child gets sick

To help keep your child and our school community safe, please take the following steps if your child has any cold or flu-like symptoms: * take a COVID-19 test and follow the current Department of Health isolation requirements if a positive result is shown

keep your child at home until their symptoms pass
common flu-like symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, loss of appetite, body aches and feeling extremely weak and tired
diagnosis of the flu can only be confirmed by a doctor after a nose or throat swab
encourage your child to wash their hands regularly and ask them to cover their nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing.

Flu vaccination

Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over.

Some people are more at risk of complications from the flu and are eligible for free vaccination under the National Immunisation Program including:

anyone aged 65 years and older * pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged from 6 months and over
people 6 months or older with: o heart disease o chronic lung disease (including people with severe asthma who require frequent hospital visits)
chronic neurological conditions
impaired immunity
haemoglobinopathies (blood disorders caused by genetic changes) o diabetes o kidney disease
children on long-term aspirin therapy from 6 months to 10 years
children aged from 6 months to under 5 years.
