Science Pizza Trivia at lunchtime

Louise Macfarlane, Academic Dean of Science

As part of Science Week, MSC 3 and 4 rooms were recently transformed into Science geek-heaven. At lunchtime, students participated in a Science Trivia competition, where they had the pizza of their choice delivered hot to their tables by Science teachers! Lucky kids!

Over 50 students competed to earn fabulous prizes of plasma balls and crystal gardens. Our Science Leaders, Ethan Gray, Victoria Hu and Anthea Diplaris, ran the event with style. Ethan’s chemistry jokes were appreciated by all.

Year 7s join RMIT Space Program

Jon Williams, Dean of Wellbeing - Year 7

We were delighted to hear that Year 7 students, Cameron Leighton and Ayaan Gupta, were both accepted into RMIT’s Space Program, which will run throughout the final week of Term 3.

In collaboration with the One Giant Leap Australia Foundation, the program includes conducting virtual space missions, designing a spacecraft, spacewalking experiences, and more.

Both students have made a terrific start to Year 7, and this achievement is a wonderful reward for their hard work, dedication to their learning, natural curiosity, and pursuit of excellence.

We are incredibly proud of them and can’t wait to hear more about the program when they return in Term 4! You can watch a short clip of them here

Year 8 Character and Connections Day

Our Character Initiative Program is in full swing! We’ve put aside several days across 2023 for our Senior School to think about important character traits, from empathy and resilience to confidence.

The morning of Tuesday 8 August was all about 'Respect', with guests from The Reach Foundation conducting a workshop with our Year 8s. This specialised workshop builds awareness of the impact and ramifications of ‘crossing the line’, both online and in the real world. The workshop aims to develop empathy, support connections and create a positive impact.

The workshop was followed by an afternoon of creating NextGen Philanthropy Craft Hugs. These art kits go out with the hope of sparking creativity and improving the wellbeing of the 731,000 kids living in poverty in Australia. With energy still to spare, our students ended the day with a good-natured game of Blind Cricket!

Melbourne Regional RoboCup Junior Australia Competition - Year 7 and Year 12

Will Frantz, Robotics Coordinator

Well done to our Year 7 and Year 12 robotics teams who recently competed in the Melbourne Regional RoboCup Junior Australia Competition at Genazzano FCJ College.

Two teams from Kilvington competed on the day. Our Year 12 Team, made up of Noah Emons, Charlie Hammond, Sebastian Keet and James Zuk, an experienced team, competed in the ‘Open Rescue Line’ division. Our debutantes, Will Casey and Noah Smith from Year 7, competed in the ‘Secondary Rescue Line’ division.

For their very first competition, the Year 7 team did very well - just missing out on being in the top three teams which proceeded to the final. They had a lot of fun and gained much experience, and are now looking forward to improving their robot to be more competitive for the State Championship in September.

The Year 12 team knew they would have a tough day going in, as they'd just finished developing their first hand-built Arduino-based robot and felt a little underdone in preparation.

While their robot didn’t perform quite as well as they would have liked, they worked hard all day to recode and make improvements to their robot. Alas, they didn’t quite make the final, but like the Year 7 team, are determined to improve their new robot for the State Championship.
