100 Days of Prep!

Charlotte Crellin, Prep Classroom Teacher

On Friday 4 August, we celebrated a momentous milestone – 100 days of being a Prep student!

Dressing old-school for the day, we took part in a day of activities, including a scavenger hunt and a fairy-bread-making lesson.

We began the day with a costume parade on the Green. Our families came to watch and support us, as did the other Junior School students and our Year 6 Buddies.

Plus, we also had some very special visitors on our special day, including Mr Collins, Mr French and Zoe Daniels, Independent MP for Goldstein, drop by to congratulate us. This made us feel extra important!

Once back into the classroom, it was time to make our celebratory crowns! (Just in case anyone forgot what we were celebrating!).

Next, we played 'Race to 100' and 'Snakes and Ladders'  with our buddies. We showed off our counting skills: one, two, skip a few, 99, 100 – see!

Believe it or not, there was still more to come! After recess, we took part in a very special tree planting ceremony, to commemorate Kilvington Centenary year. We cannot wait to watch this beautiful new tree grow alongside us.

Then we went back into the classroom. It was time to make a wonderful treat – fairy bread! We worked together to follow the steps to make fairy bread. To make sure we could recreate this recipe at home, we then made a step-by-step guide to take home.

As we had already had so much fun and the sprinkles were taking hold, we had a little classroom downtime to end the day. A movie afternoon was on the cards. We cuddled up with our new teddy bears, watched a movie and reflected on the day.

What a wonderful day of celebration, laughter and gratitude. We wonder what the next 100 days of school has in store for us…

Year 2 Maths Talent Quest

Karen Chandler, Deputy Head of Junior School

Throughout Term 2 and Term 3, Year 2 students creatively explored some Maths concepts and skills that can be found in everyday life. Each class selected an area to explore these concepts in more detail.

YEAR 2L EXPLORATION

Year 2L applied Maths using the picture storybook, Spaghetti and Meatballs for All!, by Marilyn Burns for inspiration.

Students organised table groups using counters and discussed factors of 32, the number of guests in the text. Then they used spaghetti as a tool for measurement, using it to measure various objects within the classroom.

Students also did long-jumps and threw a shot put, measuring the distance in pieces of spaghetti. Finally, they recorded their data in a bar graph and interpreted it.

Student Reflections

I learnt:

  • How to measure. Kiri
  • How to divide. Arya
  • How to measure in centimeters. Savi
  • How many pieces of spaghetti it takes to make one metre. Kari

I tried:

  • To find things as tall as one metre. Violet
  • To see if I could divide a number by three. Jayden
  • To guess the door width. Ned

YEAR 2S EXPLORATION

Year 2S explored Maths concepts using games. They began by looking at the probability of which numbers have a greater likelihood of being rolled with two 6-sided dice. They then created a Bingo card using this knowledge.

Students also investigated the number of squares on a chess board. A general principle that students arrived at was that finding patterns can help solve Maths problems.

The game Battleships uses coordinates, and playing a game of battleships was an authentic opportunity to label, call and identify coordinates.

Student Reflections

  • Coordinates show where we are. Ollie
  • I found patterns when counting squares on a chess board. Raymond
  • I looked at the chances of rolling different numbers on a dice. Parker
  • Maths is everywhere. Daisy
  • There are lots of squares on a chess board. Mia

Both Year 2 class inquires have now been submitted to the Maths Association for judging.

Year 5 Physical Science

Karen Chandler, Deputy Head of Junior School

This term, the focus for Year 5 Science is Physical Science.

Earlier in the term, Year 5s explored the nature of light by viewing different light sources and identifying whether they are natural or artificial. They used torches as well as a laser to investigate how light travels.

Following that, students were introduced to shadows and how they form when the path of light is blocked. They used the scientific method to carry out an experiment investigating how the size of a shadow is affected by the position of the light source.

They identified and controlled variables, carried out a procedure, measured and recorded results and formed conclusions.
