SATAC Applications

It is time for our Year 12 students to complete the application processes for both University and TAFE course for 2020. An information session earlier this term provided the details on this process and students should now be logging on to the SATAC website and completing the necessary details. Students have up to six University and three TAFE preferences. These preferences can be adjusted at any time prior to 2 December 2019 (Equal consideration closing date).  Applications for universities close on 30 September at which time the $45 processing fee must be paid. All Year 12 students will participate in a Transition interview with myself or Mr Wooldridge during Week 8 or 9 this term to ensure they have created a pathway into further study or work for 2020. For further information please make a time to speak at the College.

Year 10 Debating

On Wednesday 21 August, the final round of the 2019 Debating season took place. Team members Joel Davidson, Ryan Tang and Chloe Le met at Glenunga International School for a special short preparation time debate in which they were given their topic just 90 minutes before the debate began.

The topic was ‘That the Elgin Marbles should be returned to Greece’ and the team was given the negative position. They spent their time researching, having philosophical debates about ownership, eating chocolates and frantically writing cue cards. Unfortunately, the opposing team did not arrive at the debate, leaving us to win by default. The team was still able to participate in an ‘Adjudicator’s Debate’ to deliver considered and thoughtful arguments, including a blistering rebuttal against the imagined counter-arguments of imaginary opponents; and, receive valuable feedback and constructive criticism for their future careers in public speaking. Despite not having an opposing team, the students had great fun and learned a lot about the political and cultural significance of ancient artifacts. They are to be commended for their enthusiasm and commitment throughout another excellent Debating season.

Drama Excursion

The Year 10, 11 and 12 Drama class recently saw 'Jasper Jones' on Thursday 22 August at the Dunstan Playhouse. Based on the novel by Craig Silvey, this Australian text explored the troubles facing two unlikely friends when a girl takes her own life. Both a mystery and a coming of age story, it provided powerful themes of friendship, family and suicide whilst commenting on the social gossiping of small towns and inequality due to race.

The students thought this production was quite intriguing and challenged us as audience members. The sets, which resembled that of trees although in a stylistic way, were a standout for the entire performance, and beautifully naturalistic lighting immersed us as viewers who were thrust into the world. The acting styles were a large point of our class discussions and allowed us as students to absorb and interpret the different ways the characters were presented.  This focus on character development was especially useful for the Year 10s who are preparing for their year level production.

A thank you to Ms Brenko for coming along with us, and a big thank you to Mr Richards for giving us an opportunity to spend a morning in the theatre.
