LIBRARY NEWS

This week from the Library..

Sorry Day & Reconciliation Week

This week during library lessons we are remembering the Stolen Generation and learning about the importance of Sorry Day. We are reading ‘Sorry Day’ by Coral Vass and ‘Stolen Girl’ by Trina Saffioti. Students so far have been saddened by what happened to Aboriginal families and have had some thoughtful discussions about what it would feel like to be taken away from their families. These books have helped us to understand these events and pay respect to the Stolen Generations.

National Simultaneous Storytime Day

Last Wednesday, all of Primary joined in with other classes and libraries across Australia to read the picture book ‘Hickory Dickory Dash’ by Tony Wilson and Laura Wood. Our students from K-6 enjoyed the story and finally found out why mother mouse was racing up the clock at 1 o’clock. I don’t think we ever get too old to enjoy picture books.

New Books

This week we purchased some exciting new books. After the success of ‘Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls’, I thought it was important the boys weren’t left out either. We now have ‘Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different’ by Ben Brooks, which is a celebration of great men who have dared to try new things. If this is as popular as the girls’ book, I’m sure this will be flying off the shelf.

Two books about children with diabetes have also arrived and are interesting reads about the disease and how children live with it. If you would like to borrow these books, please let me know and I can send them home with your children.

Finally, following a student request, we have added the ‘Selection Series’ by Kiera Cass. Grace (who didn’t want to be seen!) finished the first book over the weekend and said she, “couldn’t put it down” and has moved onto Book 2. These stories are available in the secondary Fiction series.
