Magis report

All Magis and Altiora students and parents are invited to the 2020 Magis Mass which will be held at 8:00am on Friday October 16 in the College chapel.  Please show your support for the students and the Magis program by your attendance if you are able to.  Parents are also encouraged to attend the Magis Awards Breakfast at 7.30am on Wednesday 28 October 28 (week 3)  and the Personal Project Opening on Thursday 12 November (Week 5). Invitations to the Magis Awards Breakfast will be sent out to parents of award recipients early in Term 4.

Congratulations to Ms Farley, Ms Ball and the outstanding Mock trials team which completed their third round of the competition and remained undefeated – a fantastic performance. Unfortunately there are no finals this year because of COVID-19, and the team finished fifth in WA on percentages.

Term 3 has been a very successful one despite the limitations imposed by COVID-19.  The Magis Academic House Challenge series was an incredible success.  In interschool events, in addition to Mock Trials our three Creative Edge Thinking teams performed extremely well with the Year 8 team finishing third in the state in the Language-literature section, and we fielded four excellent Years 8, 10, 11 and 12 teams in British Parliamentary Debating.  In addition nine Year 7 students attended Curtin University’s very successful  three day Global Challenge  program at Servite College.  Next term we are adding the Ethics Olympiad and International Debating to our program for the first time. Both competitions will be run via zoom.

The following are the current Magis dates for Term 4:

  • Week 1: Friday October 16:  Magis Mass
  • Week 3:  Wednesday October 28:  Magis Awards Breakfast 2020
  • Week  5:  Monday November 9:  Ethics Olympiad
  • Week 5:  Thursday November 12:  Personal Project display Opening

International Debating starts on Friday 23 October and runs for four consecutive Fridays whilst we will also compete in the Quest Competition at UWA in November (Date TBA).

Warmest thanks to all teachers and students involved in the Magis program this term.
