Smelling the roses
I conducted an enrolment interview online during the week. Our prospective student was born in Victoria, with her parents and extended family all originating from Western Australia. It was explained that face-to-face schooling in Melbourne was for eight weeks in Term 1; two weeks in Term 2 and home schooling for the duration of Term 3. It is certainly a contrast from our experience in Western Australia which has had far less interruption.
It is important to ‘smell the roses’ and be grateful for the opportunities that we have all been afforded. I have detected that same positive attitude from our Year 12 students as their formal classes are concluding and they are preparing for final assessments and graduation celebrations. I saw similar optimism last weekend when our netballers played off in eight grand finals winning three (with a Bantock sister in each winning team). Our Year 11 dinner dance was enthusiastically attended by our students and staff and our Primary students have enjoyed this week’s mini dance showcases.
A similar theme of ‘positivity’ will be explored at our annual staff conference which will be scheduled at the beginning of Term 4. It is an annual event and this year we will be focusing on staff wellbeing through a positive lens. The ‘mood’ of a classroom is often reflective of the teachers and other adults in the room and it is important that our staff are valued and supported at the College. I always enjoy receiving messages of endorsement from students and parents thanking members of staff for their efforts and expertise and I have great delight in passing them on. To enable all staff to participate in the conference our office will be closed on 12 and 13 October prior to classes resuming on Wednesday 14 October.
At enrolment interviews I always ask families why they are considering John XXIII College for their children. Many responses are received with Catholicity, reputation, co-education and facilities all mentioned. Significantly, the great sense of community reflected in our students, staff and parents are regular responses. Thank you to all who contribute to that positivity and best wishes to all in our community for the school holiday period. I especially thank Mrs Deb Tanham (Mary Ward) and Mrs Ellen Beotcher-Hunt (Music) whose contractual periods conclude at the end of this term.
