From the SRC...

SRC Member Reflections

The SRC is the main student body for student voice of Wantirna College. The SRC aims to promote and enable students to involve and express their ideas about issues concerning students and the school community. It also advocates for student opinion to be represented fairly for schoolwide matters, along with providing students with a dependable cornerstone in which they can seek help from.

The SRC has been continuing to meet this year during remote learning via MS Teams. It has been a challenging but rewarding year for all students involved. If you would like to be more involved in activities at the College, come along to our meetings in Mason House every Thursday lunch. For our Years 8 – 10 students we will still be meeting online with those students in Years 7, 11 and 12.

Here are some reflections from SRC 2020 members.

I have really enjoyed being on SRC this year. It has been really fun being a part of organising fundraising events and year level activities. It was a good opportunity to meet and work with students of different year levels and to see how SRC works at Wantirna College.

My time in the SRC 2020 has been an amazing experience and I have enjoyed every second! It is a very inclusive group, and we are all given the opportunity to voice our opinion on things that we think should happen. If you are looking for a sign to join the SRC 2020 or even in 2021, this is it. It is a fun group and you just get to be yourself.

This year has been quite different in how the SRC has done things. With a lot of new faces this year, it was fun to get to introduce everyone to the basic activities that we do like the Free Dress Day back in terms 1 and 2. Although it was harder to run things during remote learning, we made the most out of it, and decided to plan out a foundation and roadmap for all the SRC’s to come, which I’m very excited about.

-Richard Ha 11E, SRC President

Through my involvement within the SRC, I have been able to gain an insight into the student led council who represent our College’s student body. To me, student voice is what makes a school successful and as College Captain it was wonderful to be able to work with likeminded leaders from the younger year levels. Although there was a limited amount of activities that could be organised and run throughout the year due to COVID-19, the work that has been done is for the long-term. Which included looking into the future at ways to continue to involve students in a range of activities. Given the challenges faced, this year has provided a strong base for next year’s SRC to continue to take on opportunities that are presented.

-Samantha Styles 12G, College Captain, SRC Member

As a regular at SRC and being an executive for the first year I have personally been able to learn how to work in a team and also speak out about my ideas and having the assurance that my ideas will be heard and acted on. It was also really fun to have the opportunity to run things like free dress days and activities as you learn a lot about what happens behind the scenes and really appreciate the people who plan these things each and every year.

-Jabez Yu 11F, SRC Co-Treasurer

My time at SRC this year has been quite an interesting one, having the opportunity to have a different role within the SRC as the Vice President has been a lot of fun learning new things and working with new people has been great. Especially with how different this year has been, it has shown me how teams work in different ways to how I thought they did before. While being at SRC having the opportunity to learn new things about organizing events has been so much fun to learn and plan. Lastly the having the opportunity to work with so many people from so many different people have been such an amazing adventure.

-Charlotte Hoath 11F, SRC Vice President

Becoming secretary of SRC this year was a great ordeal for me as it is my first leadership role I have taken in high school. Having only joined the SRC as a member halfway through the previous year, my perspective of how the school runs has vastly changed. It is extremely eye opening to witness the works of ambitious students collaborating and striving to plan events, with each and every student in mind. I have further developed my abilities to work in a team-based environment and my communication skills to convey ideas to other people. This year has been difficult to handle and made planning special occasions much harder than it needed to be, however it will be rewarding to see all of our future plans take place in the coming years.
