A Virtual Victory!

BSC Virtual Cross Country competition

Congratulations to Lan Se house who won the Virtual Cross Country!

The mighty blues were strong throughout the whole competition and showed their determination with the most participants willing to take on the challenge!

Throughout the month of August, the streets and parks of Brunswick and the surrounding suburbs were awash with competitors vying for victory - and we congratulate them all on their efforts.

It has been a tough few months in Learning Areas  - and Sport is no different. Although we were able to hold a few interschool sport days at the beginning of the year as well as our Swimming Carnival, all sporting events were quickly cancelled from the end of term 1. However it was the VCAL team, in particular Year 12 student Dillon Barrett, who wanted to keep up the fantastic House spirit whilst we were in Remote Learning.

The Virtual House Cross Country was created for the month of August, not only to encourage students to remain active during isolation but also to stay connected to the school and their peers via some healthy House competition. Students were required to find a 3km track, oval, foot path or trail,  time themselves over the distance, and then enter their results to score points for their House. The main aim was to champion participation, so students and staff were welcome to enter more then once and continue to score points for their House.

It was fantastic to see so many entries from students giving this challenge a go - but it was one House that from the start had a constant flow of entries throughout the whole month. Lan Se (Blue) were the victors purely through the number of entries and students willing to give it a go - regardless of how well they thought they would perform. Although it was not done in our traditional way, I found it rewarding to see so many students become involved in supporting their House.

House Captain - Lan Se

Year 10

I thought that the virtual cross country was fantastic because it encouraged me to get out of the house and go on a walk/run. It was also an amazing way to score some points for my house!

Year 10

I really enjoyed being able to take part in Virtual Cross Country as I found it a great way to stay active and motivated during lockdown, while also earning some points for my house. I liked how we didn't have to be a "runner" to get up and give it a go, even if that just meant a 3km walk/jog. Go Lan Se!

Year 7

Campbell and I went for a 3k jog/walk together. We social distanced and had a great time! It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and it was good catching up with an old friend who I had not seen for a while - and I earned points for Caagar!

Community Spirit

Additionally,  a number of staff and motivated students produced a promotional video for the community in order to encourage others to participate,  which was circulated via Compass and Teams.  This innovation was very entertaining and very well received; we thank them all for investing their time and good humour to produce it!

Special thanks to Dillon Barrett (Year 12) who took on a starring role!
